Can you use a regular milk frother instead of a matcha whisk?

Yes, you can absolutely use a regular milk frother as an alternative to a traditional matcha whisk or "chasen." While the traditional method involves a bamboo whisk, a milk frother can blend the matcha powder well with water or milk, creating a frothy beverage. It's especially useful when making a matcha latte or if a bamboo whisk isn't available. However, the texture and flavor may vary slightly from traditionally whisked matcha.

I actually have both and prefer the traditional bamboo whisk (80 prongs and higher) and mixing it in a bigger matcha bowl. I find the electric frother produces bigger bubbles and not the microfoam which I prefer. A good quality bamboo whisk with higher number of prongs produces smaller bubbles and foam for me, which in turn makes my matcha a lot more creamy and tasty. I also whisk it for at least 15 seconds, but if anyone has trouble whisking, then of course the next best option will default to the hand held frother.

I use the whisk to blend, then the frother after to make foam in the latte. 😊

Good matcha tea isn’t just about the quality of the matcha, it’s also about the process. By process, I’m referring more to the effort that goes into making a cup rather than how effective a frother is. Using a bamboo whisk takes longer and needs more physical effort, giving the cup more value when produced; matcha tea worth drinking not just for the taste and nutritional content, but for the effort you put into making it :)

I feel sorry for you if you think the bamboo whisk is not the best option.
