Was Dante's Inferno As Good As I Remember?

When I think of the terms "underrated" or "underappreciated" in regards to video games, Visceral Games Dante's Inferno immediately comes to mind. Many take issue with a game for wearing its inspirations on its sleeve and boil the game down to just a God of War clone, copy or rip-off and I just don't see it that way. I see Dante's Inferno as a God of War inspired romp through the nine circles of hell and I'm totally okay with that. Well, nostalgia wise at least as I haven't played Dante's Inferno since I was 13 years old and felt it was about time I revisited the game to see if my nostalgic opinion holds up. How does Dante's Inferno hold up 11 years later? Is it worth your time revisiting or playing for the first time? And simply, is it as good as I remember? Let's find out!

Ill never forget the ending of the game, and me being so happy for the sequel, many years later and still no sequel

This game made me collect myself as a man and encouraged me to get myself together internally. The lengths this man went to in order to right his wrongs and save his wife's soul, even without believing he'd save his own, is inspirational.

I'm not as religious as I used to be, but when I saw my first playthrough of this game god damn did the depictions of the circles of Hell scare me. All of them were downright terrifying visually and the creatures that inhabited them just made it even worse. Probably the one that frightened me the most was Gluttony. Not because of the three headed intestine Cerberus, but the obese monsters that would eat sinners.

This is a diamond in the rough kind of game to me. It's actually really good when you give it a chance

the bosses
the enemies.
the fighting.
the music.
the upgrades.

everything was so well done, especially the design for each circle. once you upgrade both holy/unholy, Dante’s so OP. wish we got a part two.

I think this game actually feels a lot more unique now than it did when it was released strictly because there have been so few hack-and-slash games released during this generation. It kind of reminds me of old movie genres like Film Noirs and Spaghetti Westerns where they released a ton of them during their era, but then they largely stopped making them, giving them a distinctive quality in retrospect.

I hate to sound like one of those fuddy duddy "things were better back in my day" types, but the 2007-2013 era of video games was the best time for cutting-edge, innovative stories. Look at the stuff EA was publishing back then. Dante's Inferno, Dead Space, Alice: Madness Returns, Mass Effect, and Shadows of the Damned (which was largely changed from its original concept, but still pretty fun). Then look at the unoriginal garbage they've been publishing since then. Pretty depressing to think about.

Being born & raised a Christian, eventually backsliding, & now on my way back, I can solidly say that even if it wasn't biblically accurate, this game TERRIFIED ME & is probably one of the many reasons I find myself today, once again, a devout Christian.

Already saw MrHammers' thoughts on Dante's Inferno but wanted to see another person's on the game. It's a highly underrated game that got pushed aside because "it was copying from another video game" rather than just taking inspirations from said other game. Sad that will not get a sequel and we will not see our beautiful wife Beatrice.

The voice actor for Dante absolutely killed it.

This is easily my favorite out of that era of hack and slash games. It feels like it takes the best of each game in the genre and just applies a badass aesthetic to it. The scythe as a main weapon, the ability to make choices in real time to absolve or punish enemies and characters, etc. All come together to create a good time.

As someone who is religious and read the divine comedy I would love a sequel of Dante going through purgatory and paradise I loved how this game made one of my favorite epics into a bad ass game about redemption, condemnation and just pure wholesome slaughter of devils

God damn, I forgot how good the backdrops looked.
And it sucks that we only get about three or four of those in the whole game.
It's looking at those vast, endless vistas of a place created for and of eternal torment, that's when I personally felt the most "in Hell."
I swear, a ground-up remake of this game with just a little more focus on that would make me drool.

A thing that genuinly blew me away by this game as a kid was its music, like the music for this game is god tier (pardon the pun) and I was amazed it didn't get as much recognition when it came out.

What a great setting for a game, though the poet Dante is not exactly a good fit for a hack and slash though of course EA executives just ask "what's popular now?". This Dante is closer to Kratos and basically the opposite of the sorrowful thoughtful protagonist of the Divine Comedy. I still can't believe they tried that, just as when I first saw the newspaper article announcing the game (first time seeing a video game in Italian news). I had forgotten about that until youtube recommended to me Mr.Hammers video, glad to have found you guys and glad to see a more in-depth look at this high-budget weirdness!
(note about Italian pronunciation: the 'e' is always read as in 'red')

It really is a great game. I remember fighting Dante’s father I died so many times but refused to give up. If it wasn’t for a health increase slot that I just so happened to have enough money saved up to get during the fight and using the the rage meter to go for broke in the final leg of the fight don’t think I would have beat him. And the final boss I specifically saved a health and a mana increase slot for the final fight used both of them up on the first stage thinking might as well use them now only to find out it was a multi stage boss. What a fight it was.

I loved this game when it came out. But the greatest thing it did for me was make me seek out the poem itself.

I played DI a few months ago for the first time (retro phase), seriously, this is one of the smoothest games when it comes to gameplay and combat I have ever played
