Very impressive that the Soviet Union is still in 2nd place

When you think about it. You can determine a country's success by splitting them into two categories.
1.) Rich and stable enough that citizens can train for years on end. Living comfortably enough to continue to chase their dream either through their own means, sponsors or government grants.
Or,
2.) have an authoritarian government obsessed with showcasing their dominance by heavily investing in their athletes, allowing them to focus solely on training.

Also,
Woot to Australia. Punching above its weight since the beginning.

Wow,

So France was the only country to ever have more gold medals than America.

And that was only for a 4 year period between 1900 and 1904.

In the Top 20 there are very rich countries,
the only exception is

Hungary in the 8th place,
it's an outstanding performance.

Germany is such insane in Sports, if u look at the size of the country compared to the other TOP 5 here, also they have won 4 world cups and are even better in Formula 1 and Wintergames

Is it possible to retroactively break up the medals of the USSR and add them to the totals of modern nations? Like if an athlete was from Russia in 1960, you add it to Russia or if an athlete was from Latvia in 1988, you add it to Latvia, etc.

I'm curious what the redistributed totals would look like.

Australia is one of only four countries which have been to every summer Olympics. You'll note the 2 gold we won in the first modern Games in 1896. Edwin Flack was an amateur gentleman athlete who took himself from London where he was furthering his accountancy career, to Athens to be our sole representative that year. This was his first real international competition and he walked away with the gold for the 800 and 1500 metres. The 1500 metres running and swimming races have always been fairly good to us!

Uhm... East Germany and Western Germany are united, so why do you still count their medals separately?
