Trunks was also stronger because he was older and his father emphasized training over play.
Goten did seem to put more emphasis on training in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber once Buu killed his mother.

Oh my gawd I miss this grown, wise version of Goku, you can just tell his experience fighting his whole life and living to fight for the people he loves is not to be taken for granted. Such a good character in my opinion

Tbf, the fact that Goten is still fairly comparable to Trunks despite being younger and having much weaker training conditions is impressive

I feel there's a huge overlooked factor to these two as warriors. Trunks and goten were stated by goten to play fight all the time. While vegeta obviously trained trunks, he wasn't involved with him enough to know his own son could go ssj or handle that lvl of the gravityroom. Both the boys focused on play over training which is why they both lack discipline in the battlefield. Moreover, trunks and goten are way more familiar with eachothers powers (for example they're both aware of eachother being ssj and knowing goten can't fly etc) because in reality their primary training n why they're advancing so quick comes from eachother. Goten literally discusses this with gohan after their first fight. Idky ppl keep acting like goten and trunks weren't the ones to constantly influence eachother as fighters and pretend they have completely different backgrounds where trunks was pushed way harder than goten. Goten wasn't held back by being trained by chichi vs trunks with vegeta. Based on the evidence in the story, they're primarily pushed by eachother through play fighting, with vegeta and chichi being just supplemental (why vegeta knows less about trunks power than goten). The only reason for trunks being stronger and goten weaker is age. Otherwise they'd be the same strength wise.

Considering the amount of power they had in the Buu arc (being the youngest to achieve super saiyan), its honestly insulting how worthless they've been in super. No power ups or growth of any kind. They've remained static copies. You know there's a problem when they make Roshi relevant again before using them.

now imagine if goten received training from goku and how to control his ki he'd probably be stronger than trunks remember goten never had much training in terms of power he only did little sparring matches with chichi while trunks would sometimes train with vegeta but he's still only a little bit stronger than goten cause he's older I wonder how much power goten would have if he was trained properly

I firmly believe that while Trunks is stronger than Goten since he's older, Goten has more potential. It doesn't take all that much for Goten to keep up with Trunks and eventually surpass him.
