The 2022 Volvo C40 Recharge EV Lets You Go All Electric. Safely.

Nearly every automaker offers an electric car nowadays. Volvo’s second full EV is the C40 Recharge. Similar to the XC40 Recharge, it drops the X and the squared-off back end. C30 has more of a coupe silhouette. The interior is rich in recycled materials and it’s packed with the newest interface that runs the Android Automotive user interface. How does its range and charge speed compare to other modern EVs? Tom Voelk travels to Palm Springs, CA to check one out in Fjord Blue. And true to Volvo’s safety reputation, there’s a section on what the company does to keep people from harm, and the companies commitment to sustainability and recycling.

Thanks Tom for the work you do. It's so easy to take you for granted, when you are this consistently good at what you do.
No Titanic Ego shuffling around, No unnecessary Machismo, No Cringe. Just Genuinely curious and Genuinely helpful. Hopefully the world won't run out of Voelks like you :)

i love my C40, the acceleration is AWESOME and the door is easily among the heaviest out there, like closing a vault. Sadly, range kinda sucks and Google Automotive keeps going offline

Great review. Tom always delivers a thorough, honest assessment for any car.

Surprisingly I've found at my local Volvo dealer a used 2022 C40 with 16k miles and just under 38k. The catch? No idea. But going to check it out thanks to this review. 👏

Another great review Tom, thank you. Adults like informative and well done videos, you hit that every time. Just wonder was that an intern from Volvo? Holy cow. Rep’s look different than they did in my day…and I couldn’t agree more, that screen is a perfect size. Great car. Nice job all around

I would say the carpeted front footwells are a bit of a miss if you live in a snowy climate. Going to be hard to stop the sides from looking shabby quickly, unless you get some really good winter floor mats that go up the sides - covering the carpet so what's the point of the carpet.
Great review as always Tom.

Absolutely love my new C40 Recharge in Fjord Blue. This is an absolute brilliant beauty that have gotten so many compliments, looks and positive reviews from all my friends and family that have seen it. Loving the exhilarating feel of speed, precision, power, comfort, simplicity, sexiness, and safety. Hands down the best EV Volvo has designed and built out.

Thanks for your commentary on visibility. That is a key element for this short buyer and no rear wiper is a deal breaker.

Always appreciate your highly informative videos, Tom. A couple things from a Volvo XC40 Recharge owner. We live in Minnesota, and though we never ran it all the way down, in the really cold months the Mileage Assistant would show a max range of 150 miles. We didn't get the heat pump, which I think would be a must if we were to do it again. Weather affects range! Also, my wife was recently rear-ended in the Volvo at a stop light by an Audi Q5 going around 25 mph. The front-end of the Audi disintegrated, which to be fair is probably what it's supposed to do, the Volvo? Got a little wrinkly. If you want to go somewhere fast, in vast comfort and almost certainly arrive safely, I can't recommend these cars enough. Thanks again, Tom!

My first new car was a 1984 Volvo 244GL in a similar blue color to the car you got. I had it 18 years and only retired it as parts were getting expensive once it passed 15 year. The car saved my butt several time in hard breaking situations. During my time, I was rear ended in city driving with my damage to my car. Absolutely love the safety features and how the car drove on the road. The Kia EV6 with its crazy markup is close in price to the C40. Great to hear it gets its advertised range. Drove 36 miles today but Tesla said I used 55 miles. 😞 A 80% charge if a M3 SR+ is 218 miles but driving range is 170. Another great review of electric cars coming out. If only this parts shortage would go away...

THANK YOU for calling out the voice commands. So many car reviewers don't highlight voice capabilities and ding cars for not having physical buttons. I agree that touch screens are worse than physical buttons, but good voice controls trump both.

Volvos do not do well in Consumer Reports reliability scores. I have friends that own them and love them, but as a brand, they do have their problems, repairs and maintenance being a serious concern. I love all their designs and would buy one except they are just too expensive both to buy and to maintain. Another great review and profile of a very appealing product all the same. Nice going Tom!

Great reviews as always - I'm a long time subscriber, I watch them before any other reviews. One ask, could you include ground clearance for SUVS? There are some of us that take them light/moderate off-roading, camping, etc. It's good to know which are somewhat capable and which are useless (some are lower than cars).

I’ve always enjoyed your very informative reviews, Tom, which is why I’m a longtime subscriber. This review hit close to home because I’ve been seriously considering the C40. Your comment (i.e. “People aren’t buying sedans like before but apparently, they still like the roofline.”) is very insightful because it explains why I like coupe style SUVs.

I like the car but the range makes it a non starter for me

I drove a VW 4ID and was pleasantly surprised. And at 52k its the same financial overall cost of Subaru Outback at 40k and 25mpg. The RAV4 is 50k but MPG is 42 so the yearly cost is probably the highest yearly cost if you drive 10k yr.
