I am struggling to see the news here! We have known for about a century that bacteria like 'eating' blood nutrients, which is why sheep blood agar is commonly used to grow bacteria. We know some bacteria can move about using flagella. Most high school biology students know that motile cells often move towards target molecules (chemotaxis).
The only news in the research appears to have been about an amino acid, serine, in serum (the watery part of the blood).
One day soon, they might also discover something else we know, that pathogenic bacteria need the iron in our red blood cells to grow. There is a fascinating molecular level tug of war between bacteria and mammalian cells to grab or keep iron stores...
