This is less of a comment on the 1880s era depicted in the show than it is a social commentary on the coarsening of American culture, public decorum and personal manners in 2024. Most middle-class Americans have had the same reaction to the public use of crude profanity in front of children and other socially inappropriate situations -- and more than one of us has been tempted to slap the bejeebers out of a perpetrator.

Chuck wagon cooking is some of the best cooking. After we saw city slickers we found a mock cattle drive, it included supper from a chuck wagon that had steaks and cowboy beans. I never thought biscuits cooked on a fire would be very good, boy was I wrong!

This is a prime example of why you DO teach them those words, so they know not to say them. Her just threatening him for saying a word he didn't know he couldn't say because she sheltered him from it is exactly why you don't shelter them so much.
Also in those days, you did NOT disrespect the man that prepared your food. If your cook told you to get in line, you get in line.
