Evolution and natural selection can be a process that is guided by natural processes with no plan. It has no plan for it is a natural process, natural process don't have a mind. But God does have a mind. Therefore, God can have a plan. God can work through these processes and guide them to a particular goal.

How does the fossil record factor into this ? Do they not show more significant changes because of their age ?

I’m gonna crush the intelligent design argument with a simple question. If everything requires a designer who designed god? You can’t say he’s eternal because you’d be going against the very argument you are using.
