Don't have the money to buy one? You can make one yourself. Everything in the video was purchased at a craft store or a hardware store. Total to make two leather strops was around $25.

Basswood bare with compound makes for a pretty good strop. Scott Gunn recommends it frequently for his Gunny Juice. Also recommends first adding a layer of 3M micropore then applying GJ with a brush. When you need to reload, just peel off the tape and put on a new layer. Very cost effective.

I like your design. I have not made a 3 sided strop like this. I have made several 2 sided strops similar to this. I used thinner wood, 1/2 or 3/4.

White school glue works great, just clamp 2 blocks together with some wax paper or plastic for a few hours. In some ways white glue is better than Super 77 because it comes apart with heat from a clothing iron if the surface wears out, no fumes, and no overspray.

Self adhesive felt is also good. I made several for friends with straight razors cutting nice handles in the end, as well as long strops for compounds.

I was thinking it might be better to attach the block to the full uncut piece of leather then cut the leather using the already attached block to guide your knife. should then have a perfect fit. Also no chance of the block moving while your cutting the leather. Just a thought, I could be totally off base as I have never tried making a strop.

Hi Greg! What type of leather do you recomend? I have a few scraps of both smooth and suede leather and I'm not sure which to use. Thanks!

I use double sided tape, it sticks the leather on perfectly, but you can peel it off easily, and put another piece of leather on in seconds, also, I have the reverse side of my strops covered in micropore tape with diamond emulsion on, ,
Cheap and better alternative to expensive "shop bought" strops..

if you cut on the smooth side it'll go quicker
