At this point nvidia might not be focusing on gaming

*doesn't push hard
*catches on fire
*pushes hard
*breaks the connector

Main takeaway: keep fire extinguisher on hand

Correction* Even while perfectly seated, they've started on fire. A repair shop in Asia has been keeping track of the 12pin, misshaps and showed proof that it's a design problem in most situations. Not a user error.

Still a lot of power to be passing through that little connector

Recently installed a 4090, what people should know is that there is a rating on the power connector on gpu. It will say either ++H or +H. ++H is the safer port due to the power pins only going half the distance to the entrance. They also have a better connection as well. Another thing to know is that you should have about an inch and a half before bending the wire to the case wall which should be done by using a hairdryer. You can see the ++H or +H without taking the cooler off the gpu but its in the back of the connector face which you need a good angle to see it. Hope that helps anyone who is wondering.

I would say the lack of VRAM on the low end is probably a bigger mistake than the connector

Sounds like those flames could be next level raytracing implements.

Funnily enough, i was on 4080 for about 1, 5 years. Liked the card, build quality was solid, but surprisingly, some of the nvidia "premium" driver features worked either half the time or not at all in indies and older games that i tend to play, unlike AMD's counterpart versions. FFS, on my old RX 580 i could apply image sharpening to literally anything, even 20 year old games, but with nvidia's software, the setting would be sometimes either grayed out or frequently reset from the sharpening factor i set up - back to its default setting and i guess it didn't work even then, because i couldn't tell the difference visually of it being ON vs OFF. ShadowPlay would sometimes disable itself for no apparent reason which drove me crazy.

I used cablemod's angled adapter (first 1.0, later 1.1 versions), didn't had any issues with either of them even long after the recall drama popped up. Most of those issues were occurring on the 4090, but 4080s weren't unaffected AFAIK. I used the card undervolted from day one, so maybe this played some role here in 12VHPWR connector not melting down. Even with all of that i used to check the state of it every month/two by replugging it.

Got really tired of this wannabe """premium""" $1200+ experience, sold the card for ~$1000 few months ago, found a deal on Red Devil 6950XT for ~$500 and it's been sweet sailing since. Can't really tell much of a performance difference on 1440p144hz with 5800X3D (in half my games i'm still mostly CPU limited anyway), but most importantly, no more dealing with the 12VHPWR which felt like constantly walking on eggshells. I'm really confused af, because generally Nvidia and their features are nowadays considered superior to AMD's, meanwhile my experience has been exactly the opposite. Sure, good RT perf might be nice to have for some, but with most of the corpo cash-grab cut-into-a-million-dlcs wannabe "AAAs", imo it's still like putting lipstick on a pig. ReLive works exactly how i want, Image Sharpening and AntiLag too. No need to use Afterburner for OC/UV settings any more, where AMD's software does just that without issues. I know Nvidia's upcoming driver software app will finally get updated, which is awesome and over the past nearly 2 decades i've seen lots of different issues affecting both Nvidia and AMD hardware, so it's not a matter "X brand has issues, Y doesn't", but these past few years feels like nvidia online shills multiplied by x10 over how things were around 5+ to 10 years ago. Wherever i look i see nearly constant "Nvidia good, AMD bad" with ppl focusing on listing productivity advantages of nvidia hardware in "What GPU for gaming?" threads/posts, which kind of smells like the mid 2000s when there was a sudden outburst of rumors/articles of Nvidia supposedly hiring shills to promote their products (look up 'nvidia caught hiring forum shills'). Either a really successful marketing strategy or typical zoomer brand tribalism.

All in all, as long as nvidia sticks to the 12VHPWR, i'll be skipping their cards, unless they're proven to have some miracle healing capabilities when using them. Not really interested in dealing with that """premium""" experience a 2nd time. Also, can't wait to see how AMD will shoot themselves in the foot this time, but with RDNA4. Not going to be surprised if Battlemage/Celestial might end up being the main breath of fresh air for us enthusiasts.

Advice: Keep pushing even if you think it’s inserted for atleast an additional second to ensure it’s fully inserted and use a flashlight to check for any gaps between the connection.

12VPWR is the reason why i wont touch nvidia with a 10 foot pole (well that and the price to performance drop off)

That's not a connector! that' a ticking bomb

This happened about 50 times out of all the Nvidia cards. It was caused by bending the cable over. They redesigned the cable to prevent it.

Built a PC recently ( Aug 2024 ) watching this video way in advance saved me. Those cable really need to be pushed in a ton.

As someone who works with servers and power connectors daily the first rule is to check if something is really properly connected

As an auto technician, I always make sure the connectors are inserted ALL the wayy

I also have to give a real hard push to make sure it's in there.

I have a 4090 and the biggest thing when plugging in is making sure you hear a click to know it's seated correctly. That's what i have heard is the biggest cause. No click, restick.

I agree, you have to "firmly push" to make sure it "in all the way" and it should probably be "snug and thight" to make sure it's right.

First of all damn. Second of all, thank you. You very well could've just saved my build. Wasn't connected all the way and was turning off every once in a while.
