Anthony week, it really is Christmas.

Another note: when GPU overclocking, artifacts can be a sign that the settings are not matched well. I have run into the problem of a stable overclock having artifacts because the power limit was too low, with it raised they went away. The GPU is healthy and always undertemp just not enough juice

It could also be caused by faulty power supply. Power supply messing up has the capacity to pretty much cause every other component in your system to act funky or break.

Man, this was like on-demand, my GPU died a month ago and had exactly those kind of weirdness on the desktop until it refused to post and then was totally fried; I've been playing with integrated graphics since then.

DLSS no longer trains against a high resolution image, only the first generation did that. 2.X is more like an advanced version of TAA with a generalized pre-trained AI handling the reconstruction. Hence why it can ghost like TAA and why you can swap DLSS 2.X version between games to change/improve how it looks.

Awesome video though. Makes explaining things to others WAY easier. Keep it up!

Defective cards with artifacts are not necessarily dead or dying, sometimes it's a fixable issue, like cracked BGA solder joints on memory chips or on the GPU itself. This is something a good repair professional with the necessary tools may be able to fix. The possibility of repair will vary from card to card, and wouldn't be cheap, but considering how expensive the cards themselves are it can save a lot of money if repair is possible.

if you're having artifacts despite doing everything in the video, check the thermals of the GPU. if those are high even if the fans are moving and the radiator is clean, your thermal paste might be dried up (not likely on new cards but I've had that happen on an old one). you can replace the thermal compound, but it requires you to remove the cooler from the card.

2 other kind of artifcat can be seen, see the quality of the HDMI cable and / or the actual monitor. With bad HDMI ive seen green dots appeering. With bad monitor have seen lines and squares even if the monitor says its G-sync.

For artifacting or weird visual glitches make sure to verify the HDMI cable you are using is actually certified for the type of bandwidth you are putting it through. For example, I had a super long "HDMI 2.1" cable that I don't think was actually certified and I would often get weird activating, screen flickering, and sometimes discoloration at 4K 120hz 10bit. After buying a shorter, actually certified HDMI 2.1 cable all of these problems went away completely

Back in the day “shimmering” was referring incorrect texture seams where you could see the stuff behind them flicker, kinda like on and off white lines in the distance. I don’t really think that’s a thing anymore tho.

As a last resort Underclocking the graphics card can help also. I had cards that when underclocked by 50-100 MHz became stable with no more artifacts and extended the life of the card by a few years.

I'm really surprised he didn't mention check monitor cables and monitor first because faulty equipment can produce those blocky artifacts, and both are way cheaper fixes than replacing a video card. Sorry but this is troubleshooting 101 here. If replacing an HDMI or DP cable doesn't work, try the monitor out on another pc or laptop. If monitor checks out and cables check out as good, then I would look at doing some of the things Anthony said in this video.

Still, I would expect from someone who is as experienced in this as Anthony is, to point out the glaring obvious things to do first. I'm a system admin and I definitely do some troubleshooting with the lowest hanging fruit first before tackling the higher hanging fruit, as should everyone. I mean, 1000 dollars (or more) for an impossible to replace video card, or 20 bucks for a HDMI/DP cable? or 300 for a sweet monitor? Yeah, check the basic shit first.

Those artefacts can also appear in heavily used GPUs when the solder has cracked over time. As a last resort you can fix that by removing the heatsink, fans and wires and popping it into an oven to reflow the solder. Just be careful to ventilate the room and clean your oven thoroughly afterwards, and try to find a guide to follow, there are many. It can keep your card going on for months and even years.

I had this last problem on 1 of my 2 screens.
After some testing I found out one of my cables was to blame.
Ordered a new cable and my both screens worked as new.

Always check the easy fixes first.

3:56 don't forget that a dying monitor can cause artifacts. My Dad had a tv that eventually started having green lines going through it, and I once bought a monitor from good will that had dots on it

"Oh boy a video on how to fix the weird artifacting I see in my games recently!"
"Yeah your gpu is dying."
"Ah, beans."

Note on the artifacts talked about >2.40 make sure you check if your HDMI cable actually supports the bandwith needed. Bought a new 4 k screen but didn't upgrade the HDMI cable( it said 2.1 on packaging, turned out to be a lie ) so I ended up having artifacts. after buying a proper HDMI cable they went away.

in my experience, sudden wild 3d image artifacting in WoW may simply mean your cpu block's fittings are not fully tightened, and the back of your hd4890 is now a lake.
