Why Dune MUST be a trilogy

A brief explanation of why a Dune trilogy would be ideal. What do you all think?

I personally wouldn't want a Dune Messiah adaptation without also doing a Children of Dune one. TV show or film, I'm not picky. Just keep Villeneuve involved for all of it. But I think there's too much important stuff in Children to not put it to screen alongside Messiah.

And if that somehow launches into a God Emperor of Dune TV series and I get to see a human-sandworm hybrid, I can die happy.

I completely agree. People who haven't read the book or really don't know much about the source material will judge this first movie and call it "a white saviour story that enforces imperialism" etc... and I'm not sure how the second movie will actually enforce these ideas and will it bring the point across?

In "Dune the book" that theme of "don't make heroes" is much more subtle while "Dune Messiah" is much more apparent with it. That's why I think it will be important to have that part of the story adapted so it gets the point across completely and people don't start idolizing Paul and his fanatical horde.

While my one friend who has read the Dune books isn’t into the idea of Dune Messiah being adapted, I for one trust Denis Villeneuve more than I probably should trust a man I have never met. If he wants to make it then let’s do it.

Even the first Dune book's adaptation is in safe hands.

"Dune Part I" has PLENTY of signs that Paul isn't and doesn't want to be a "Messiah" (though how much of a "naughty boy" he is won't really be evident until we see a "Dune Messiah" adaptation), something that even a lot of the audience - especially those paying attention - have already picked up on.

I think you can safely count on Villeneuve to continue with his trademark "story-telling of ambiguity" in forcing audiences to struggle with the increasing moral ambiguity of Paul's actions in "Part II" and come to their own judgements about them. What I most dislike about Lynch's Dune is how it transforms Herbert's story into an out-and-out hagiography. No chance of that here.

For what it's worth, I don't think a trilogy would give a full rendition of the full tragedy of Paul's story arc. For that we need an adaptation of Children of Dune as well. But given the time lapse between "Messiah" and "Children", it's almost certainly something Villeneuve would prefer to leave to another director to do later.

The ideal plan: Have Villeneuve do Part 1, Part 2, and Messiah, then have him as the head/showrunner (though maybe not the only director. I want to see other movies from him sperate from dune) of 4 different miniseries covering the rest of Frank's books on HBO. Maybe they can dip into Brian Herbert's stuff too, but that depends on how much of that is considered fully canon

Unlike GOT, all of the plot has already been completed before all of this would start, so the chances of having another "Season 8 Incident" would be a lot slimmer as long as HBO/Legendary/WB keeps their hands clean

That might be a bit too optimistic, though. We'll see

Dune Messiah is a mindblowing and amazing book. First time i finished it I had to reread it right away to experience it properly. Only on my 3rd read did I grasp it all and can confidently say it is as good as the first book. But so are all the other dune books, especially 4 5 which surpass it imo.

I can't believe Villeneuve purposefully removed most of the complexity and subtlety from the story to not repeat Herberts mistake of not making the point clear enough and people STILL believe Paul is somehow a true hero in this story.
