BANGERS and MASH Onion GRAVY Classic BRITISH Comfort Food

preview_player
Показать описание
Bangers and mash with onion gravy is a classic British comfort food consisting of sausages (often pork or a mix of meats) and mashed potatoes, topped with a rich onion gravy. The "bangers" in the name refer to the sausages, which historically would make popping sounds when fried as the skins split. This dish is popular in pubs and home kitchens for its hearty, filling nature and simple, satisfying flavors.

The onion gravy is typically made from cooked onions, stock, flour, and often a splash of wine or Worcestershire sauce for added depth. This gravy sets the dish apart, providing a savoury, umami-rich sauce that complements the creamy mashed potatoes and the flavourful sausages.

Bangers and mash are enjoyed throughout the United Kingdom and have various regional variations. They may include different types of sausages or additions to the mash or gravy, like mustard or herbs. Bangers and mash are particularly beloved as a winter meal, offering warmth and comfort during the colder months.

American here. Funny story! I'm new to this channel but I've already tried some of his recipes in the recent past and I absolutely loved them. For some reason I just really wanted a classic English meal that I never made before which was bangers and mash and yorkshire puddings that he made in another episode. While I was making this dinner, I just happened to check my calendar and realized that today is the feast of St. George, patron saint of England. This was totally accidental! I just thought it was amusing. I don't know how big of a deal this is in England, but if anybody over there is reading this post; Happy St. George Day!!! And God bless the U.K.!

Oh shades of childhood long before the pizza and takeaway era. The thick onion gravy is the star of the show, then creamy mashed potatoes, only then the bangers.

As an Australian, born in England this is my childhood comfort food! My Dad, the real cook in our house always parboiled sausages before frying them!

The brown onion gravy is the star of this dish. But, the sausage and potatoes complete the rest. Simply good cooking is right. 😋😋😋

THIS is now on my bucket list. I'm an American who's been cooking (at home and in restaurants) for over 60 years. I can attest to Rik's way of cooking sausages of any type. (Sometimes I prefer to grill them, but when using a pan, the boil-and-fry method never disappoints.) In general, Rik's methods are spot on. This is a man who knows what he is doing. I really like how he points out options and doesn't get hung up on details that so many other "chefs" mistake as important or even critical. As for this particular dish, I am all in on using the peas as a side. I've seen that baked beans are a popular accompaniment, but my personal taste leads me to having those with a BBQ'd or smoked meat. Just a personal preference... In any event, I am anxious to try this. I just have to make a trip to a butcher that I know makes bangers. (They're rare here. Luckily, there's an outstanding butcher less than a 30-minute drive away.)

The boil down method of cooking sausages is used here in Wisconsin, but we often use beer instead of water, and bratwurst sausages

It looks amazing, Rik. Now, that's what I call a plate of bangers and mash. The garden peas finish it off. That'll put hairs on your chest. Another winner for me.
