You compared many things, but you forget one crucial part: the actual programming language itself. And Ruby wins in that regard hands down. Sure, if you can't get a job at all or if there is no ecosystem at all, that doesn't help, but both are not the case.

It took you 7:15 minutes just to express that you are a Python Developer? Holy Shit!

I am going to learn Ruby because I think it is a cool language. Is that even an argument? I am going to learn Python too for obvious reasons.

Ruby can blow out python in matter of seconds. In fact Ruby is 5x faster than python in 2019. I am talking about Pyhthon 3.7 vs. Ruby 2.6. If you are curious, comment below to see benchmarks. Or you can benchmark both the languages on your own. Ruby is definitely the winner. Python's capability is just over-exaggerated.

Also, Ruby 3 will be way faster than 2019's ruby, and it will not have the GIL.

Glad I’m learning python in school. Thanks for the comparison, Chris.

I think the speed benchmark must be way out of date. Ruby has been ahead of Python (though still horrible) in terms of performance for several years. Two other categories I'd have added where Ruby is a clear winner would be: web dev and suitability for start-ups.

It wouldn't have been as exciting of a video, but I think it would have been a bit more honest to say use Ruby for web development or server-side scripting, use Python for ML and most other niches, lean towards Python if you want a big salary and lean towards Ruby if you want to bootstrap an online business. Don't use either if you need performance.

Thanks for uploading this video, it has confirmed what many have also told me here in NYC. I'm starting my Python curriculum focused on machine learning and AI in a few weeks. Followed by deep dives into how to leverage it for DataScience/analytics.

I haven't tried ruby, but I am a fan of python; easy to use and powerful

I appreciate this video. I have been a programmer for about 20 years and early on I was more concerned with languages I "loved" rather than what the market wanted. I believe that was a mistake. No doubt Ruby is really cool and will probably someday have another great app associated with it (like Rails), but right now those interesting in the profession of programming should learn Python (which is also quite awesome) and only after that learn Ruby in whatever time may be left.

I agree with this list as a overall programming language python wins by popularity... but for self taght developers and people looking to get into web development this is one language you must stay away from because the jobs are not there for you.

Ruby 3.0 will be released this year in Christmas, so that will solve the speed issue and also as of this year salary for ruby is much higher than python according to stackoverflow, as far as the future of ruby after 3.0 Is released I think ruby has a bright future ahead since it solves alot of the issues with 2, garbage collection, static checker, and parallel computing, and don’t forget it has the best communities online.

You are obvious very bias when it comes to python over Ruby. however when it comes to web
development and start ups Ruby wins hands down and you know it son!
