I think the fact that Ruby is mainly only known for Rails, but Python is known for being able to do 1000 different things speaks volumes. In regards to speed, most computers are so fast nowadays that 99% of the time you can't even tell that Python is slow unless you're needing to build some kind of graphics-intensive, enterpise-level desktop software, or need to run asynchronous operations.

I'm a 2nd year undergraduate finance student with interest in management information systems (MIS). But I don't want to switch majors, but rather want to learn a good general-purpose programming language that can help me bridge the gap between finance and MIS. Kind of of like having a major in finance with an unofficial minor in MIS.
