World's Most Extreme Railways - Congo-Ocean Railway (Part 1)

EXTREME JUNGLE RAILWAY... Built by French Colonialists, with forced local labour, in the 1920s the Congo-Ocean Railway's most perilous section crosses the dense jungle of the Mayombe Escarpment.

Built in narrow gauge in an area frequently devastated by floods and landslides, the original Mayombe section became so dangerous that it was eventually abandoned and a new line was built further south.

In this film Chris Tarrant enjoys a rare opportunity to travel sections of the original old line with a local journalist and TV celebrity, Daniel Mayengue

EXTREMITY... The railway's history is rife with tragedy. An estimated figure of 17,000 workers are thought to have lost their lives during its construction between the years of 1921 to 1930, mainly due to accidents and disease.

DID YOU KNOW... The Congo–Ocean Railway originally used a rare Belgian Golwé steam locomotive, built specially for the French West African colonies.

Says it's disused but the rails are shiny from use and the ballast is largely weed-free. Seems legit.
