There is also a tutorial area on the big lava lake to teach you this. There's a bunch of rusty weapons and an unreachable octorok on an island there

I knew about this one, but didn't know it could give royal items. That's pretty cool

I found out about this by pure luck. I was in Gordon city, heading to the islands in the middle of the lava lake for the Main Quest (Find Yunobo), and I just so happened to have a rusty lance. On the way there's one of those octoroks, so I thought of throwing the useless rusty lance at it to kill it, then I saw how it ate the lance and threw back a royal lance at me, and I was amazed haha.

I didn't even know they could eat stuff off the ground at all let alone fix a weapon.

Nintendo's attention to detail and playfulness with game mechanics is truly astounding!

I knew this. Half the time I did it was when I only had a few hearts, so I’d jumped out of the way and it would shoot it so far off any mountain, I wouldn’t be able to find it. It would disappear. And yes, I used magnesis to search.

The only reason I knew about this was the book about BotW's development, which mentioned it. I would never have found this out otherwise lol

After all these years I didn't even know that...

To think that the sequel is coming out in 2 weeks and we're still learning details about the original...

My first ten hours of playing back in 2017 i was struck by lightning standing beside a tree and resurrected by mipha. When the fire cleared away i found a toasted hylian mushroom behind it and some toasted hazelnuts that fell from the branches. Made my jaw drop and seek out the finer details to this day. Its the little things adding up that really make this game timeless.

If you do this with items from the Eventide trial it can even mess up and spit out wooden equipment due to a glitch; as far as I'm aware all the other rusty weapons and shields in the game are actually metal though.

I’m surprised more people didn’t know about this

I played Age of Calamity and there’s a blacksmith that uses “Octo-Polish” on the same rusted weapons. I never thought to translate it over to BoTW, even though there’s ALOT of crossover between the two games 😅

I found out while a walkthrough of the master sword trials. The second trial gives you a bunch of rusty weapons and shields at the beggining, eventually there's a rock octorock for you to clean the weapons with.

Never knew you could turn the rusty shield into a royal shield!

This was actually one of my favorite things to do early game. Learned about it in some random video around the time the game came out.

I've completed Zelda 100% and I played it for 6 years, but there are things that I do not know... WOW

I actually learned this very early in the game, tried throwing a rusty halbert at an octorock and he ate it and spit it back at me.
I was rather surprised

The fact that this game came out like 6 years ago and I didn't know about this is insane.

Apparently, I've played BOTW not nearly long enough to discover this, I even collected all the 900 korok seeds...mmm, well I might as well dive into Tears of the Kingdom only days away.
