In the space of 15 years, CrossFit has gone from a crazy fitness idea to a cult-like mass movement that has revolutionised the fitness industry.

Propelling CrossFit from 15 “boxes” in 2005 to over 12,000 “boxes” and a valuation of over $4B dollars 10 years later.

In this video, we’re going deconstruct how CrossFit tapped into their audiences deepest psychological drivers to build a product that has become a cultural phenomenon.

We will breakdown the 3 key reasons why people join all mass movements and how you can use these same strategies to tap into your customers deepest desires to build a cult-like following for your business or cause.

The 3 keys to a mass movement:

1) Promise your followers a chance of a new life.
2) Create a strong shared identity and community for your followers. A cause that is polarising and goes against the status quo.
3) Package your movement as a completely new opportunity, completely unlike what they have ever seen or tried before.

If you can successfully execute all three of these strategies you will be on your way to replicate CrossFits cult-like status and create a loyal fan base only a select few companies ever achieve.

Everything about crossfit is a complete piss take. From the annoying extroverted behavior of the vast majority of crossfitters to the complete lack of proper form in exercises, among just two examples, crossfit is just a vicarious outlet. It is nothing more than a cabal of high school-peakers who want to relive the glory days of JV baseball/softball. Also, many exercise programs don't have poor results. You just have to be disciplined and willing to put in the work.

That being said, great video. You definitely hit the high points and made complete sense. Crossfit is definitely an "us vs. them" mentality, which is why they do virtually all the things they do. It's like I have always said. Wait, crossfit isn't about exercise? Never was.

Oof, made me pity those poor extroverts that had to endure isolation in the gyms. But just a bit.
