"You can always edit a bad page, you cannot edit a blank page." I live by that quote lol.

1. Write every day.
2. Get up early to work - modify if you can't work early.
3. Stop self-defeat.
4. Be open to criticism.
5. Personal rituals.

I'm sorry, but rule 2 is exceedingly closed-minded. Morning people assume everyone else is lazy, sleeping away the most productive part of the day. The arrogance is outstanding.

The reality is that people are different.

There are times I get up and write early, but that is almost only when I'm at the end of a novel (the last 25%) and the story has me gripped so hard I can't sleep more than a few hours at a time.

But the morning is not necessarily the most productive time. It takes time for my mind to really get bubbling, but I'm frequently writing until very late at night, and I do some of my best work after everyone else has gone to bed and no one is bugging the crap out of me.

Getting up early works for people who are productive when they get up early. Staying up late works for people who are productive when they stay up late. And both habits are equally legitimate.

So Rule Two SHOULD be: figure out when your most productive time is to write, and then protect that time so you are free to use it.

Fascinating video, although I'm pretty sure Alexandre Dumas wrote "The Count of Monte Christo" and not Victor Hugo.

Anne Rice has stated in many interviews that she simply cannot write prior to 10 am, so while I myself work best from about 11 am - 6 pm, I also find I can write from 11 pm to about 4 am, but a morning person I will never be.

As far as the rituals he mentions - they become triggers for the mind to say, "Oh, okay. We're getting ready to write now." It is a very human thing to do. We all have rituals when we get ready for bed, or preparing to go to work, etc. The repetition or routine is the way we train our minds to get our "heads into the game". Personally, I love it and when I have time for those triggers, my writing is much easier and more productive.

I loved your advice, but I kept pausing the video to read the quotes. My brain can NOT pay attention to both at the same time.

I have a 3 stage morning ritual to help me wake up and prepare me for my daily writing. 1. After making my bed and showering I play this game on my phone called World of Guns. Its this game where you disassemble and reassemble guns. I play it for like 10- 15 minutes, It helps pull away the morning fog and get my brain working. 2. I doodle in my field notes notebook (I love the Field Notes company, look them up their cool!) I heard somewhere doodling increases creativity. Im not sure if thats true but I found another perk from it that helps me allot. My first challenge when writing is writing the first few sentences. I've found by doodling it removes that challenge, I'm not afraid to start writing anymore after doing it. 3. I meditate for ten minutes. This is the buffer stage that removes the layer of morning fog completely, puts me in an all around peaceful state of mind, if I don't feel like writing I tell myself, I can be lazy today, I can sit here for as long as I want, I can keep doing this for as long as possible to avoid doing work. I never reach ten full minutes, I usually get restless then I grab my tablet and start writing immediately. I've been developing my overall daily schedule for the last 8 months, I just started this three stage morning thing 2 weeks ago. I think I'm going to start timing myself, 10 minutes for each activity because I've just been testing it out. I like it. I've been way more productive since I started and so far I haven't skipped any days for writing.

I have only 2 rules for writing. I must know what I'm writing about and I must make it compelling.

Don't follow what others has followed, its better if u find and follow your own way. Writing has no rule, what u need is; when the readers are reading you book they should amaze and find trouble to put it down. Follow a way which no one have ever follow, try to dominate the reader's mind, and believe me, if you find your own unique way of writing, people will read your work, and Eventually you will become international hero.
All ways think differently because you are different. All the best for all the writers around the world.

"Many of us struggle to write on a daily basis. Work, relationships, and laziness tend to keep us from writing" how about self doubt. That seems like the write answer to me

I am writing since 7 years. I work very hard. I write professionally in my own language but my language is persian and there r not good translators who translate them to English. I want to write them in English. Offcourse the idea and the story themselves are very important but the language (usage of proper words, phrases, sentences...) is one of the most valuable elements that should be taken extremely serious.
What do you think, a person who lives in a non-English country, can he learn English to write at the same level like Native-English-writers ?

You can’t turn off or ignore your inner critic, you simply find ways to trick it.
Writing early in the morning is one if those tricks. Your critic isn’t awake enough, or isn’t strong enough, in the early morning to stop you. The more the day goes on the stronger the critic seems to become.

I'm an upcoming writer. I always keep my draft on the phone and edit it whenever inspirations augment. I virtually have no specific time for writing.

so many things, but I'm forever pausing the video to read the quotes... again and again and again.

Great video! I loved all the quotes. The only correction I have is the big elephant in the room: Victor Hugo did not write the Count of Monte Cristo it was Alexander Dumas; other than that, job well done.

I mostly write at night even when it's past 12. So that drives my mom crazy. But sometimes I write in the day
