Q: What are the differences between Buddhism & Taoism (Daoism)?

Both are wonderful ways of life but I believe the Buddha explains things more thoroughly and more detailed and complete. For the Daoists, the end goal is to ascend to the heaven realm to become immortal, whereas the Buddha teaches that even the heaven realm is not eternal yet, it's simply one realm in the cycle of reincarnation despite beings enjoy a tremendously long lifespan there. The Buddha teaches us to recite the Name of Amitabha Buddha to seek rebirth to the Pure Land which is outside the cycle of reincarnation and one can realize Infinite Light & Life there.

Zen Buddhism (Chan in China), particularly the Japanese Sōtō school are very, very heavily influenced by Daoism, and many of us practice both, I.e. the 'dual cultivation'.

I sometimes wonder whether the cycle of rebirth is meant literally. Same thing for immortality or ascending to the heaven realm or whatever you said. Perhaps these terms are meant in a metaphorical sense.

Also, those people that claim to remember their past lives... maybe they really are remembering their past lives. Or maybe they just have some thoughts that they have decided must be their past life- when in reality it's just thoughts.

The goal of tao is not really to heaven . The goal of taoism is to be xian(仙） or immortal (immortal in spirit that not rebirth anymore cuz in taoism every rebirth are not 100 percent same as present ) immortal or xian are one who achieve tao (fully understanding with tao )
