Why You Pee At Night — The Most Overlooked Reason

In this video, I argue that sleep-breathing problems such as obstructive sleep apnea and upper airway resistance syndrome should be the first reason to think about when you suffer from this nighttime urination. Nocturia (nighttime urination) is a widespread condition as you get older, but it’s also common in children as well as younger adults. There are many explanations for nocturia by experts, but obstructive sleep apnea is rarely mentioned. I also explain which hormone from the heart is made due to apneas to make you pee more at night, as well as frightening statistics on much higher death rates for people with nocturia.

Waking up to pee at night is still a lot better than not waking up!

You are 100% right. I’ve had this habit night urination for EVERY single night at 3am for the last 15 years maybe. I was diagnosed with sleep apnea and 7 days ago I started using my CPAP machine and the night urination habit/issue disappeared immediately on the first night using the CPAP therapy machine.

Thank you Dr Park. After nodding off while driving and barely avoiding what would have been a fatal accident, a week later by amazing luck your video popped up on my logarithm and put all the pieces together for why I'm always so tired. I didn't know the connection to frequent urination at night and sleep apnea and now I have an appointment for a sleep study. Once again, thanks!

Bravo Doctor Steven. I get up many times, and when I arise in the morning am filled with nasal congestion and post nasal drip.

There are nights when I urinate frequently and some nights when I don't...I thought it was because I drink more water during the evening...I usually sleep on my back or start sleeping on my back but sometimes find myself sleeping on the sides when I wake up... or change position to the sides as I sleep...I have stuffy nose at other times as I sleep... I'm glad to have watched your videos as they're very informative... it's just that you tend to talk faster at times in the middle of your talk and the words sound mumbled...anyhow, thanks for sharing your knowledge with us.

A couple of years ago I went to a sleep clinic and had an overnight test. I had sleep apnea. They recommended a C-pap machine. THE first night I noticed that I only got up once or twice a night to pee. No one at the clinic mentioned that this may happen. I had been getting up 4-6 times a night. It was a nice surprise, and SO noticeable that I immediately recognized the connection. I then asked my doctor and he said that, yes, there is a connection.

Thank you for this video, Doctor Park. I had been waking up to urinate 3 to 5 times a night for about 3 years now. I followed your suggestion to have myself tested for sleep apnea recently. I had been using my CPAP machine for almost a week now and my nocturnia stopped on the very first night. I have also been getting more sun exposure, losing some weight, etc., as you have suggested in this video. Thank you again.

Thank you much...I've noticed that I wake up once to urinate during the night after I drink water before going to bed. I did not know that drinking liquids leads to urination; I learn something new each day.

Check this out... The main reason is most of us 40 or older guys take night time pills and if you're like me and don't like to feel my pills coming up i drink a full glass of water and yes it wakes me up a couple hours later. I hate when doctors think they know everything and then think You Tube is so creditable that they make videos. I'm just a lowly Engineer with a masters in Mechanical and Robotic Engineering from Stanford, and have to double check and correct my VA doctors so frequently specially on medication prescribing i should be working there. I think sleep apnea is a bad thing, but i think hooking someone up to a machine that, is a germ cooker and as recently shown could cause cancer or makes you have nightmares because you face is being smothered in a grip or bunging cords and plastic. doesn't make sleep any better, just worse.

Thanks doctor for your lecture I am 42 years old and I have realized that I urinate close to 7-10 times at night. Then I also discovered that my BP used to be 165/95 this days but with your recommendations I am now aware of the cause. Thanks I really appreciate

I am a 71 year old slender woman who exercises and I have mandibular devices to open my jaw to help my sleep apnea. I started waking up every two hours to pee at night when I went through 10 years of chemo induced hot flashes from breast cancer treatment. That started 21 years ago. I continue to wake up every two hours no matter what I do. I wish that what you said worked for me but it doesn’t.

I wake up to pee at least 5 times per night. I have only slept through the night about 5 times in my life. Since listening to you, I notice my mouth is dry so likely I am have apnea throughout the night. I am a daytime frequent urinator too. I was a bedwetter as a child so nothing new for me. Small jaw with lots of extractions. I am over weight now too. Very helpful. 🙏
