My mother 100%. 🙄 Before my son’s first birthday, she casually asked what I was getting for him. I told her, and then she sent me a text a few days before his party saying, “Don’t worry about getting him {gift}. I already did!” … I had gotten it for him weeks prior. It was something thoughtful that I had put a lot of time and thought into. She just stole my idea. Fast forward to that Christmas. She kept telling me all these things she was buying him and I asked her to please stop because she was spending like $2000 on Christmas gifts for him and first of all it was far too much and second she was only doing it to show me up. 🙄

Already laid eggs in your car…
It’s the gift that keeps on giving!

so thats a black listable offense for me. Do not, i repeat, DO NOT buy my children pets as birthday gifts without speaking to me first. I will prevent you from seeing my child over that until they're old enough to make their own decisions .

There's a place in hell for people who give kids live animals without running it by the parents first. It's not 'just a pet', it's a huge responsibility that could end badly if it can't be properly cared for due to being a surprise.

This was actually my parents. Every childhood birthday party they would constantly one of each other. I remember one year my mom bought me a airplane swing set ( at age 5 I wanted to be a pilot) my dad went up hurt by renting a private airplane and flying me all over the town showing me different places and I got to be a copilot.

My daughters grandmother.
She told me if my daughter misbehaved, she’d take a switch to her.
Having already witnessed her meanness, if it wasn’t her favored adopted grandson, I slowly/calmly informed her that if ANYone ever laid a hand on my child that I would come from the far corners of the earth if need be and give them an Emergency Room beat down.
She never touched my child…
That was one mean woman. She’d never had anyone stand up to her. But she knew I was 1000% serious.

My MIL is one of the most toxic people I've ever known. Not to me, to my husband! The way she treated him shocked me! It took him a few years of being loved, adored and doted upon by my parents to realise that parents are supposed to LOVE you no matter what! We went no contact with his folks a few years ago... His dad was just caught in a bad situation but was an enabler in a way and his elder brother is a prick too so hubby decided to cut everyone out. Secretly, I'm glad he did it and I didn't have to be the bad guy because I KNOW that woman would have been unbearable to have around after we had kids!

You do NOT give a live animal as a gift! That's a commitment that MUST be discussed first. Some crazy ppl out there fr.

If my MIL had pulled that on me, I'd have told Winnie, "Yes, dear. That is your special dog. And you can play with her, every time you visit Grandma's house, because that is where the dog will be living. I'm sure that Grandma already bought ALL the supplies the dog will need, and has them all set up at HER house, so why don't we go over there soon, and you can play with your puppy to your heart's content. And when you're at home, you can play with the stuffed dog you were so excited about, just a few minutes ago. After all, dogs require a LOT of attention and care. They need to be fed and washed and walked, and you have to pick up their poop, and carry it to a trash can. And Grandma will be doing all of that, at HER house, so you don't have to worry about that responsibility. That's part of her present to you, is that SHE is taking on all the responsibility, while YOU get to have all the fun, every time you visit HER HOUSE. Now, what do you want to name your puppy?"

You don't FORCE an animal on ANYONE. And what if the family live in a rental that does not allow pets? Or maybe allows pets, but not dogs? What if someone is allergic to dogs? What if someone in the house has a phobia of dogs? You must ALWAYS CHECK FIRST!

And if you don't get a clear "Yes" from the parents, then the default answer is "No."

Never give a child a pet as a gift until they are old enough for the responsibility AND you have the complete, total approval of the parents/guardians.

Thanking the Lord I have an amazing MIL. She's not toxic and any overstepping she does is done because me and my husband are young and on our own and she's genuinely worried for us.

My aunt actually did this at my 7th birthday I wanted everyone to bring donations for a dog shelter (do like beds, food, toys, potty pad thing like that) because we had just gotten my dog from a rescue and wanted to thank them, most people did bring donations but my aunt didn't she got me a bunny with out consulting my mom or dad I now know that my mom had some very strong words with her after the party and the big crazy gifts were saved for my brother.
But the best gift I got was the lady who ran the rescue named the puppy she was keeping from the most recent litter after me!

My response to this would be "and you get to play with it every time you visit grandma!"

That’s a nasty grandmother. She would endanger the life of a goddamn animal just to see that she’s the favorite. If the family didn’t decide on a dog, there’s a high chance that somethings gonna go wrong. Disgusting.

My exs.mother took my daughter when she was 3 and got all her beautiful red curles cut off without asking our permission and then he( my ex)told me his mom and I were both crazy and to leave him out of it ! 🤬😤who does that kind of stuff when it's not their kid!!

Linda gets to make sure Winnie always has food to feed that dog, now, too. Give my kid a gift that's a financial responsibility, you get to take the financial responsibility. Let's not forget the vet trips

Your grandma is super generous, because we can’t have dogs here she is going to look after the dog and keep it at her place. We can visit often.
