my router is a Black & Decker kw1200, which I mostly use for carpentry.
will this method work for me or should I build a firewall? maybe out of treated plywood or something.

This notepad explanation is more helpful than any actual demo, this form of teaching works the best .

The absolute ESSENTIAL rules before connecting a RPi to your network:

1: USE A STRONG PASSWORD for you Pi username! (Most important!)

2: Setup UFW-firewall on your Pi (and customize the settings as you need)

4: Make the "sudo" command demand a password for all users. This will make you and everybody else need to type in your password everytime the sudo command is used in a new terminal-tab. A bit annoying, but it decreases the risks of someone messing with your configurations.

5: Install a trustworthy VPN (this should be essential to do on ALL your devices)! Preferably install directly on your router if it's supported.

6 (This is just for extra security): Create and password-protect a new username, then only use that to login to you RPi. This way a hacker won't as easily find out that the device is a Raspberry Pi by trying to login with the pi username (there are still ways to find out, but an average hacker will probably not try them out)

7: Have common sense and do not download/surf into weird sites! Also, if you don't need a network connection at the moment - simply disconnect and only reconnect when you need to! And keep SSH off if you're not using it.

You can find guides for each step easily by searching, they're posted everywhere. Comment if you still need assistance :)

why are you trying to scare people from putting pii on the internet. I understand word of warning, but maybe explaining best security practices is a better way to go about it. Not scaring people...

Thanks! If you are looked into dyn-dns you can also just write a script running with crontab checking your IP and emaling you if it changes. Works if your IP doesn't change too often.

I agree that you sound upset about youtube kids asking about their router, but I understand and your video was extremely helpful. So thank you.

Thanks for the video really helped me understand the concept. I have a question though, what would happen if we port forwarded multiple devices to port 80? When I typed in my external ip address into a web browser, how would it know which device to display?

So my question is, why not have a guest network on your router and have your pi connect through the guest network?

Don't worry about the exposure. Just purchased an additional physical firewall and place it between the modem and yournetwork router creating a DMZ. Than noone can see your network. Connect raspi to the firewall.

Nice job Skiwithpete, it helped my understanding considerably.

So, what if you can not forward ports because the ISP disallows it? Is there a way around that without being forced to use a VPN?

Many ISPs these days use NAT including my own and this will not work since your internet exposed IP is shared with others and would require forwarding at that level as well. There are ways to do this via VPN and third party websites though. Also, many routers including some Linksys routers use high addresses for DHCP and leave lower IP's for fixed.

Empathy is what is missing in a lot of videos. 30% instruction + 70% Empathy in your video is very good. Keep up the good work. Thanks
