How to Connect to a Raspberry Pi Directly with an Ethernet Cable

Ethernet is the fastest and most reliable way to connect to your Pi. You can set this up in just a few steps and never get disconnected from network time outs or low bandwidth on your network. You can access your Pi without even being on a network. If you travel with your Pi, all you need is a laptop and an ethernet cable to connect to your Pi!

So....in order to connect to the pie over direct ethernet connection, you have to already have network access to it?
Is there any way to connect directly to it without a network?

Guys, for all of you who are still stuck setting up the Raspberry Pi for the first time:

PuTTY SSH
Hostname: "raspberrypi.local"
Port: 22

Default login: "pi"
Default password: "raspberry"

Then you can get access to the command line :)

How did you use PuTTY to login to the Pi????
That's why I'm here.

You failed to say what Ip address to put into Putty?? Your screen shows ipv4 10:0:0:6 then you enter a completely different one for Putty. If you're going to show people, You might want to explain yourself better. Going to a different tutorial!

Don't waste your time, these meticulous and long steps can be done in a shorter, easier video. I know that a lot of these addresses will look the same, but it's not working anymore, screw this video

this tutorial is useless.. if im i dont already know how to "connect to my raspberry pi via Ethernet" why would you expect that i know how to use putty, or access the "gateway". The tutorial becomes usesless after that point.

1 - Should the laptop be connected via a crossover cable as well as the Pi? Or should the laptop be on wifi only for this?

The Etherenet cable should also be plug directly from the Pi to the laptop and not be in the router?

I only have Local Area Connection and Wi-Fi options displayed on the network screen. Is there a way to fix that?

If you do not know your RPi's ip address download Advanced IP Scanner or a simillar tool. Connect your pi to your computer with ethernet cable and power up your pi. Open Advanced IP Scanner and press the button with a C on it . Then press Scan and your pi will show in the list below with the IP address included.

This video helped me alot. How do I know that the raspberry pi 4 is directly connected to PC. I'm using mine for steam link, and since doing this the speeds are much better but there's still occasional latency. I didn't think there would be ANY latency connected directly to PC with ethernet.
