Are you saying these words in your head as you read them? This video discusses subvocalization, a reading habit that involves the saying of words in your head while reading. This is an old reading habit that reduces your reading speed. If you subvocalize all the words in your head while reading, then you will only read as fast as you talk. This video discusses strategies to reduce subvocalization so that you can increase your reading speed.

I am extremely confused as to how it’s even possible to not say a word in your head when you read. How in the world do you comprehend a word without saying it in your head?

Hahaha lord 🤣😂 I was trying to follow along at the 350 wpm pace and was like holy shit I'm dumb... That's way to fast. Then I remembered I'm watching this video on 2x speed lmao.

Thank you so much for this! I’ve heard the counting out loud while you read method and it’s impossible for me to do. I am then not reading anything, just counting and looking at symbols. I tend to talk a lot faster than I read though. 😬 I have a lot of books I want to read but it takes me so much longer to get through them than other people. I’ve been trying different methods but the subvocalizing is a hard habit to break. This tool seems to work much better for me. I am definitely going to practice with this.

Thank you for 2:20 other videos were making me think subvocalization could be eradicated fully!! I felt like that was impossible, and now I know it is 😂

For me focusing on my breathing helps me a lot in reducing it. Of course I still say the words in my head but if I don’t focus completely on the reading but partly focus on something else like my breathing it gets a lot less:)

I can't read without my inner monologue.
i see words as a visual representation of noises made by the human mouth.
To read with out the inner voice is like trying to experience music by looking at an oscilloscope.

man, thank you SO much for this! every. single. video. on this topic is someone just telling us what it is & that we should reduce it, without much info on how we CAN reduce it. this video, along with the website you've created, really made a difference.

THANK YOU!

Im bad at learning from reading, my comprehension is bad when reading too fast and subvocalization is good for me.

I think I'd be throwing all of my comprehension out the window if I tried this. I usually can't comprehend what I'm reading if I read as fast as I talk, I have to slow it down and then still catch myself reading without paying attention so I have to reread a lot of paragraphs twice, or sometimes three or four times before I actually pay attention to what was said.

I can do 3 words at a time by 600 words per minute, 800 was a struggle and 1200 (reading speed of JFK) my comprehension was stretched. I still have to practice. But now I know what you mean by reducing sub subvocalization, thank you !

Very appreciative for this video. Thank you. It is limiting my speed reading. Seems that I have difficulties to eliminate it from my reading. Blessings.

So you never remove the sub voice in your head, you just jump from word that has meaning and put them together?

if you subvocalize that means you are gonna read as fast as u can talk.

A simple way to increase your reading speed by eliminating sub vocalization, is to recite a number sequence very softly like "1 2 3 4, 1 2 3 4, ..." . or sing a familiar song like "Mary Had A Little Lamb". At first it seems impossible but soon you will be on your way to reading without having to hear the words in your head. Try it. Stay with it- it works.

Also practice a "soft focus" kind of like staring in the air, by looking just below the print. This allows you to to see phrases rather than single words. When you use a "hard focus", it makes you stop for just a moment on each word- greatly reducing your speed and believe it or not your comprehension.

350 wasn’t that fast, still said everything in my head

This feels like skimming and only getting half of the information or I'm probably just stupid. reading is fun but reading like this feels like it takes away from it.
