Evelyn Wood, a teacher from the 1950s, is credited with popularizing the term "speed reading". She wondered why some people read faster than others. One day, while sweeping her hand across a book page, she realized that her hand's movement helped guide her eyes faster across the text. She used this technique, taught it at the University of Utah, and later introduced it to the public.

I had a friend who insisted she read books quickly and understood it all. So when I read a book she had previously said was pretty good I talked to her at length about certain elements I enjoyed in the books and ideas I liked that were explored and she got really angry with me and said that it never happened in the book. When I insisted that it did happen, being increasingly confused she snapped that she had skim-read it and didn’t even care that much about the book anyway. That’s when I realised she was full of shit and if she had read it… she needn’t have bothered with how little of the story she actually absorbed and understood. What is the point in skim reading when you don’t even pick up on the meaning of the text half the time?
