In the 1980s, we desperately needed a free software movement. In the 2020s, we desperately need a free hardware movement.

People still believe corporations do charity... 🤣

‘Embrace’ - MS starts using OpenSource software - ‘Extend’ - MS puts WSL and WSL2 into Windows to push devs to code back on Windows - ‘Extinguish’ - take code away from the hands of devs and re-use it with proprietary signature. Brilliant. Kinda vicious but…brilliant.

So glad you're letting everyone know about how evil Microsoft is - ignore all the Microsoft trolls. The best way to defeat them may be thru the courts - there are clearly anti trust violations. Also, everyone should support linux only computer manufacturers - they also offer hope for the future.

I think their policy is that they think their users are too dumb to know what's good for them.

I completely agree. However, there is another side to this story. We are people who want complete control of OUR computers. We are willing to be totally responsible for what we do and for taking precautions to ensure the integrity of our systems. We take the blame when we, through ignorance or error, cause our systems to totally fail or become infected. We learn from these experiences. That is who we are. If all computer users were like us, the world would be a better place IMO.

I'm 68 years old. I have been involved with computers since the early 1970s. Practically from the beginning, computer users were told over and over again to backup their data. The majority, to this day, don't do this. Would you call this responsible, rational behavior? Early on, the need for virus checkers and firewalls became obvious. Again, people were told to make sure these safeguards were in place and up to date. Did the majority do this? NO. Finally, people have been told to keep their software up to date due to the bugs that exist in all software. The security updates are intended to fix these bugs as they are found thus preventing systems from being compromised. Do people do this? NO There are people and companies still using MSDOS, WindowsXP, Windows2000, Windows7. None of these systems have been supported in years.

Why? The average computer user sees the computer as an appliance. They want a device that, like their blender, microwave, clock, etc, will do what they want it to do safely and reliably. They do not WANT to learn about computers beyond basic operations. When something goes wrong, they blame the OS, the Developers, the Internet, the Government, anyone but taking any kind of responsibility themselves. Giving these people access to open OSs is like giving a loaded gun to a willful child. It is completely irresponsible to do so, especially in today's world. These people comprise the vast majority of the computer users today.

While the actions of the major corporations outrage us, these same actions will be lauded by the typical computer user as making their systems safer for them to use. Apple has had a heavily curated system for years. People love their computers. The drawback is the price of their computers putting them out of reach of most people. Microsoft is simply taking advantage of the situation. We hate it, the typical computer user loves it. We are the minority and have little real say in the matter.

Rather, we need to put our focus on computers that are open to any OS and particularly to Linux and the BSDs. We need to build our own ecosystem that actively supports our ideals and standards. Those of like mind to us are welcome. We are never going to change the minds of the average computer user. We are looking for the special few who think as we do.

As time goes by, I value more and more having taking the time and effort to start using GNU/Linux back on 2001, with Mandrake Linux (before Mandriva) -> every task that I made on windows was hard to replicate on GNU, but it was always pleasant. And now, I see it was worth every minute of those delays I endure. Today happily using Debian, Manjaro, Elementary OS, Kali (one distro on each of my machines).

I see manufacturers doing a Linux specific line of laptops and desktops in the near future. This is going to backfire quickly.

I don't think I've had this much fear and anxiety related to anything technology related before... I escaped Microsoft's clutches long ago, but what if I want to build a new PC down the road and I can't because of Microsoft's dystopian nonsense? What if the only way I can play PC games in the future is if I give in to Microsoft? I'm truly frightened now (legit actually scared like my heart starts racing). I can only hope that governments crack down on Microsoft, but I fear that won't happen. Valve's support for Linux makes more sense now than ever.

It's not just the hardware they want to lock down on. They (a general "they", think google, MS, Apple and so on) already pretty much dictate what search results you get to see on any search. Your hardware is just another pipeline in the "machine" that they seek to own. At some point they'll be dictating what search terms are approved or not.
That will be an interesting time for those who don't want to believe it today... install the wrong browser and then type in the wrong search term in a non-sanctioned search engine, and win a MS/Apple/Google audit, during which your device is locked up for suspiscious behavior... huzzah....

Microsoft is adding these locking down features because Windows is used by lots of organizations and institutions that want these locking down features for various security reasons. For personal computing they should provide a way to switch off these like enabling developer mode to install any program, just like you can sideload any apk on Android.

Troy, you have made so many good points, allow me to add on how 'far reaching' Microsoft is, I had a hotmail account I created in the late 90s, it was compromised via spam in 2012 if I can recall, Microsoft cancelled my account and all purchases that were associated with it, without giving me a proper answer/update informing me of such! When this occurred to me, I was truly concerned, sadly my business needs the Windows OS to work, but I'm slowly re-tooling/learning to use Open source software more.

With this new 'pluton chip' I can see Microsoft, AMD and possibly Intel being sued by the EU/FTC for limiting customer choice, because these aren't 'tailored specific' hardware for use cases (windows based computers) these will be 'off the shelf' products for customers to purchase. I look forward to seeing the outcome and I really hope these "consumer watchdogs" get on top of this!

So this means in the future when we purchase the latest laptop or desktop that the cpu in them will only run Windows, no other OS choice?
I read only that Dell and Lenovo will have Pluton disabled by default, also they show interest in Intel's Vpro.
I remember on the Xbxo360 some people used a Glitcher mod pcb to Reset Glitch the Xbox so it could run unsigned code.
I hope there is alternative Cpus to run Linux in the future; RISC-V is something positive for Open Hardware.

Once I realised I could play FFXIV on Linux at 150fps for 10 hours with no lag, do all of my Uni studies and consume all of my media I wiped my dual boot and got rid of Windows, I wiped Windows from my Laptop and now all I use is Ubuntu 22.04, I choose the LTS version of Ubuntu because it's so stable. Every single game in my Steam library works and many games run way faster than they did in Win 11. What a time to be alive, thanks to Steam Deck owners, Valve, Gabe, thanks for everything I will never use a Windows machine again.

I switched to windows 11 this year and oh boy it was hell. It was so sluggish. After 3 months of using it, i ran into a problem where my windows would lag everywhere, even in notepad. Well, i am really glad i found a sweet spot with kubuntu after that, i just love the customizations that are restricted in windows. I am currently in dual boot with windows 10 and kubuntu, and 90% of my time i am using linux and i love every bit of it. I go to windows 10 only for gaming particulaly. Linux in general provides much for support for development softwares i think and i quite like it. Also if anyone would be kind enough to suggest me a stable arch distribution which uses kde, i would be grateful.

Well spoken. I fully agreed to your words. I always use to say "I am a free PC Owner and I !!! decide what I am running and what I am installing on my PC not any company !!! " But I feel it will change in the comming years. I really hope it will. I am running different Linux Distributions on my PCs and Laptops. But yes I am running Windows for business reason but only on my company device, (Even there is Linux running )
Tumbs Up and a usual Linux Greetings from Germany

In 2022 I *still* can't get my PS4 controller to actually work in the Steam game Elden Ring on Manjaro :(

Thank you for sharing this information. We need to remain aware of the direction Big Tech is going. Building our own computers needs to become a thing again, before they take that away, too, which they seem to be already working on.
