Not being able to play fortnite and cod sounds like more of a selling point than a con

Calling singleplayer games "not important" is a insult to me!

Bro you sound like a hater
1: you only read half the comment.
2: you made the commenter’s voice annoying because your biased you. Which is subjective not objective

3: THIS IS A SELF FULFILLING PROPHECY IF ALOT OF PEOPLE USE LINUX THEN THEYLL MAKE IT A PRIORITY IF NO ONE USES LINUX THEN THEYLL NOT PIORITISE IT

I know some people will call me a “Linux cult member” it’s not an insult it’s a praise that I’m spreading the truth and the light to the unenlightened
Even if just 1 person thinks a little bit better of Linux making him just a tiny bit more likely to try it out, I’m happy.

Games are not the problem with Linux anymore: Anti-Cheat does. Most of those programs works with DRM and are Kernel based so an open source operating system where you can have full control on your system will never be a good fit. The exception is SteamOS but as some people will point out, this OS is not fully open so there's that.

Matt, we've already discussed this ad nauseam, but I'd like to add a little extra. I absolutely agree that some of the bigger games not being available to Linux-based operating systems is a problem; however, they are not the only games that matter. When you look at the statistics, FN and CoD aren't necessarily the most played across the entire community. There's a very large segment that aren't playing those games, and you can't forget about them.

My push for you guys to cover alternatives to Windows is mainly to help bring awareness to them. If content creators like you and Jack, and others don't help spread at least an awareness and show what is actually possible, then the situation will not change. Epic is heartily anti-Linux... and that's because their leadership has some kind of problem with Linux as a whole. I don't know why, but they do... nevermind the fact that I'm pretty sure most of their infrastructure probably runs on some form of Linux. But hey, I'm not here to hate... I'm here to educate!

What should be mentioned is that Proton supports EAC and Battleye (both ACs used in Fortnite), and games that have added that support run beautifully (The Finals, for example). There are tons of great titles, some of which you guys use in benchmarks (Cyberpunk 2077, as an example) that do run well within Wine or Proton (Valve's implementation of Wine for use with games purchased from Steam). Games like FH4 and FH5 run well within Proton, as does the Sony ports like GoW and the Spiderman titles. Rocket League has a platinum rating on protondb.com. Helldivers and Helldivers 2 both work well with it, as does Titanfall 2... which precedes Apex Legends (also runs well).

There are CoD titles that do work with Proton, btw... some of the older versions as well as the Black Ops titles all have favorable ratings.

The short of it is... YES, you need to give Linux a chance! If anything, help those of us in your community spread the word. I've never pushed anyone into using a Linux-based OS in place of Windows, but I've always encouraged people to check it out as an option and even give it a try. That's all I'm asking now... help us bring more people to the party or at least know that it exists and it's actually pretty cool now. In the end, we all want the same thing... to build PCs within our budgets and play the games we love... how we get there is up to the individuals. ❤

Built a new gaming desktop a month ago to teach CPU building to my kids. I installed Ubuntu on it and so far, my kids are learning a lot from Linux. Even learning how to use the Linux terminal to setup UI features which would have been automated in Windows.

They are also learning Blender and GiMP for creating digital art.

The fact that the system was not Windows motivated my kids to learn more about how to tweak the OS.

And since most of my kids' favourite games are on Steam anyway, gaming hasn't been an issue.

As a Linux user for over a quarter of a century, IDGAF what system you use. Do whatever works for you.

Wow it's like dual booting doesn't exist. If it weren't for these stupid devs implementing kernel level anti cheat it probably wouldn't be problem.

I think Recall implementation will force Linux game dev, as it will be the only way to escape having your PC screenshot every 3 seconds

You mean i just have to live with recall so i can play those amazing games and get farmed by 8 year olds??? Sounds like a very reasonable deal

It works pretty well for the things i play, i mostly play single player rpgs though, even having to run games through wine the operating system overhead is much lower so i end up with the same or even slightly higher performance in linux, the lower os overhead is nice since im running old hardware that i got for either super cheap or free
I7 4960x
32 gigs DDR3 2133 in quad channel
Cheap chinese socket 2011 board because it allows you to use an nvme
Rx 580 8gig

Plays the games i want to run at decent fps in 1080p which is all my monitor supports anyway, i think i have maybe $300 in the system total, decent low buck budget system.

I personally have almost 15 years' experience with Linux, including a lot of game testing that I did after I purpose built a Linux machine in January. And, it's come a long way since 2009, when I first tried it. But, rather than take someone else's word for it, if you're curious about Linux and want to know what will and won't work, the best thing is to download a free Linux OS, install it and see what it can do with the games you want to play. There's no cost to trying other than your time and there's a helpful community available for just about any Linux OS that will help you get set up.

Windows 11 is fucking garbage, so in Windows 10 is no longer supported I'll have no choice but Linux. SOG will teach me to make a VM

If you can avoid epic (seeing after they acquired rocket league and then removed Mac and Linux support) then yeh, Linux can run a lot of things. The only really annoying thing is Anti Cheat, however valve proton seems to be improving in that field

“If developers make a priority” I would argue that the developer is not the once say no, most likely there is a Product manager saying no.

I don't think Microsoft windows will last forever, it might lasts the next 10 years maybe but long term linux will replace it. Rather Linux Mint or Ubuntu I think could replace windows.
