iPhone Battery Repair Attempt

A classic battery problem with the iPhone is that it will drain to only 50 or 60% and then suddenly turn off and tell you the phone needs to be recharged.

I try removing the battery and draining it down using a fan load and then ceramic resistors. I then try charge and discharge the battery inside an iPhone 6 to see if it resolves the issues.

I'm not sure if the battery was damaged by the sudden cold temperatures or from a big drop.

The cost of a generic iPhone 6 replacement battery isn't too high but it would still be better if you could simply fix the existing battery instead of buying a new one.

This will be the second time I replace the battery and I was just curious to see if externally charging or externally discharging the battery and then putting it back into the iPhone would make any difference.

Thanks for the mention. We've got an iPhone 5c in the family which is showing a similar issue. I'm not sure if it's the BMS rather than the cell itself. Often it's the BMS which fails in laptop batteries, cutting the cells off too early - good news for those of us who are recycling them though!

Can you just use that battery to power a fan or an led then charge it with a bench power supply when it’s depleted?

I would have put the battery under a dummy load to determine it's capacity status, and see if it failed under normal load - all to decide if there are iPhone issues or battery issues. Thx for the video. Would have also liked to see you open the phone to access the battery.

If your iphone isnt charging the battery there is high probability the charging chip on the mainboard gone bad. It is a common issue. Can be repaired with microsoldering.

While this isnt exactly my problem, you let me know there are contacts under the battery for me to use, which I connected wires to for my battery for it wouldnt charge through the phone regular circuit. Thanks lad.

Which Version of IOS are you running right now? im trying to research if battery drops like that may have either - a.) something to do with the recent IOS updates causing different issues on the battery? or b.) your battery is going to die soon

I had a similar issue with a 5c before that would just turn off when it was 10% or 30% but when you plugged it back it it give off a different number. Eventually i had the battery replaced all everything is back to normal - and that running ios 9

now i have a 6 plus - recent upgrade to ios 10.2 i noticed that once it gets down to 10% the battery reading will randomly drop or go down real fast. I read online that ios 10.2 had problems with battery, so waiting for some feedback on the recent 10.2.1 roll out.

But chances are looks like your battery needs to be replaced basing its symptoms from my 5c experience.

4.16 is almost 100%. Which is why those chargers are refusing to charge further.
