And at the same time you can get a external SSD with at least 1TB for the same price of Apple’s SSD upgrade you can get a hub to expand the number of ports. A USB-C hub that connects a SSD also.
And you can upgrade the amount of storage in the future.

I'm on the earlier base model: M2, 8 GB Ram + 256 SSD. It's no slouch if that's all you can find at your budget. Of course get a hub for more ports, 16 GB RAM if possible, and ALWAYS an external HDD for backups and other long-term storage. And under energy in system settings, put hard disks to sleep when possible. You won't notice Time Machine backing your drive to such a "slow" drive unless and until you need to restore a backup or use it to build your next Mac with exactly what you were working with an hour ago. I've never needed the speed of a thunderbolt external drive. Of course, SOME sleepless nights, I hear the external drive spin up to do another backup. No biggie. When Macs sleep (Power Nap enabled), we sometimes get a new update overnight. And it indexes the files for spotlight/find while sleeping

Got the Pro version with a 10 Magic Keyboard, Magic Mouse and Magic Trackpad. Added an external TB4 NVME. I’m loving this thing. Never going back to Windows again…

I placed my Sabeiant 10GB/s Enclosure w/a Samsung 980 NVMe SSD with several Davinci Resolve Projects on it. They all Ran Full 1080p ai 30 fps.Even ran a very intense 4 Timeline Project with lots of Color Grading and Resourse Intensive off it and it Didn't stutter. Could not WRIGT to it Because it's Formatted NTFS but it read every thing Fine.

I can make a good argument for upgrading to 512GB of storage.

256GB is too restrictive if you install lots of large applications. Putting applications and other system components on an external drive is a no-no, because it prevents you from moving the external drive to another device (for whatever reason).

Also, I prefer physical hard drives for external storage because SSD has a limited number of write cycles after which the drive wears out. External storage need not have blistering speed. A physical hard drive can last practically forever.
