The iconic novel Gone With the Wind was published in 1936. It was written by Margaret Mitchell, who was only 25 when she first came up with the idea. She worked hard on the novel for over ten years, and yet she kept it a secret from even her closest friends and family members! It wasn't until 1936 when she sent the manuscript to be looked over at a publishing company.

Having finished her final draft, Margaret Mitchell was ready to tell her friends and family about her work. However, one of her close friends expressed annoyance when she learned of Mitchell's dream of publishing. Mitchell became self-conscious, and she began to have second thoughts. She sent a telegram to the publishing company, requesting that they send the manuscript back. However, one editor had already glanced at the manuscript, and they knew the book was simply too good to send back.

From there, the book sold millions of copies, and it also won a Pulitzer Prize in 1937. Of course, perhaps the most memorable thing to come from the book is the film. Just three years after its publication, the book Gone With the Wind was adapted into a film of the same name.

Considering the technology that was available at the time, the movie was a masterpiece. The acting was phenomenal, and the sets and costumes were breathtaking. It won ten of its thirteen Academy Award nominations, along with many other notable awards. Even though the film first aired many decades ago, it has continued to influence popular culture today. However, there were many dark secrets hidden behind the scenes of this iconic movie.

In today's video, we're going to take a look at the dark history behind the film Gone With the Wind. Make sure you stick around until the very end, where we'll reveal the horrible wage disparity between the actors. We hope you like this video, and don't forget to subscribe to Facts Verse for more!

Hattie McDaniels was allowed to attend because Gable was so pissed that they were not going to let her attend, that he threatend to no attend either. They weren't having that. Whatever Gable wanted-Gable got! I always thought that was awesome how he stood up for her!❤

How sad to hear Vivian Leigh was paid so much less than Clark Gable when she was clearly the key actress.

Can’t picture anyone playing Scarlet O’Hara as good and as better as Vivian Leigh did it.

The casting choices were spectacular, and there wasn't a single weak link in the chain.

Hattie McDaniel was a fine actor. She has been vilified for playing her "mammy" roles over the years and even today. But, I must say that she played all of her characters with intelligence and gave them a humanity and dignity. She is one of the best parts of Gone With the Wind. After all, even though Mammy would have been forbidden any formal education, she was smarter than Scarlet.

If you think the movie is good, you should read the book ! It's phenomenal. It is long, but never boring. The movie is unable to reach the depth of the book due to the sheer amount of events and emotions portrayed. Even with the films length, it only captures the main events. It really is a masterpiece.

My favorite scene is when Rhett discovers mammy wearing the red petticoat he bought her. All of her acting in the film was a well-deserved Oscar for her!

It's the entire cast that make 'Gone With The Wind' the super movie it is. Not just Hattie McDaniel or Vivien Leigh. There's Olivia de Havilland, Leslie Howard, Butterfly McQueen, I can't remember them all, but they all fit together to make the film as unforgettable as it is. PS, Olivia de Havilland was also a British actress, Leslie Howard was also British.

The film was beautifully cast. I cannot imagine anyone in the film playing the roles except those who did play the roles. Still one of my favorite films.

I can't imagine anyone other than Clark Gable as Rhett Butler. He was the absolute PERFECT choice. He embodied the phrase "tall, dark and handsome". 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰

Hattie was superb. Vivien was amazing. That was such a complex, intense role and she nailed every emotion, every look on her face to perfection. That look of seeing Ashley and Melanie hugging when he came home briefly during the war always cracks me up😂

I have read many times that Margaret Mitchell envisioned Clark Gable as Rhett Butler.
I seriously doubt that her choice was Groucho Marx!

I was 15 when I first saw Gone with the Wind. I fell in love with Clark Gable then, I am now 77 years old & he’s still my heart throb. Loved the movie as well ...great

It was not Selznik that convinced them to let Hattie McDaniel in the venue, it was Clark Gable. He said he would not attend if she was not allowed. McDaniel was so loved by Gable, he fought for her and won
