A friend in Colorado was driving home from work one evening, and a hammer dropped off the truck ahead of her, and came through the windshield, striking her in the head. She survived, but had a closed head injury that forced her to retire at 60.

I took care of a person that has a large piece of metal come through the windshield and shatter his face and skull.
Surgery reconstructed his face and skull, he recovered almost fully and was fortunate to live, let alone live without significant permanent disabilities.

I was meeting an oncoming construction demolitions truck on a two lane highway. I saw a ball cap sized rock fall off its load and start bouncing down the road straight towards me like a basketball. Managed to swerve out of its way as it went past, no one was hit behind me either.

Look at the HOV diamond on the ground, it's visible for half a second. Keeping a 3 second follow distance would have prevented this.
