Environmental activists attempted to stop the Berlin Marathon from going ahead on Sunday after throwing paint and lying on the road at the start of the race.
Local media footage showed several people attempting to lie on the street before they were pulled away by police and security forces.
The video also showed traces of orange paint on the road and a security officer who was injured during the event.
Several activists were seen taken into custody.
Witness Jan Mannheim said he was waiting for the marathon to begin when we saw activists jump over barriers with a bucket of paint.
"That really came out of nowhere, it was so sudden. We were all totally scared and still under adrenaline and didn't know what was happening to us. It was just terrifying," he said.
Before the event, the German environmental group Last Generation had signaled it intended to disrupt the Berlin Marathon. (AP)
