More than 1,500 climate activists have been arrested at an anti-fossil-fuel protest in the Netherlands. The event, organized by Extinction Rebellion, was described as an effort to stop the Dutch government handing out subsidies to fossil-fuel companies. Police used water cannons in an attempt to disperse the protesters, who were blocking a major highway connecting The Hague with the German border.

They're using the water cannons incorrectly.

They got a point. Its ridiculous how much taxmoney is given to fossil fuel enterprises while those massively increase prices and make the highest profitmargins ever.

It was a hot day, so i'm not sure using water cannons to disperse a crowd would be as useful as they would think.
I'd walk straight into that, and try to stay in it...

It would be nice if there was a public debate where advocates of the fossil fuel industry present their case as to why they need these subsidies and have those arguments challenged by opposing parties. Personally I wish the money wouldn't go to those companies that pollute but I can understand that in the current situation it might be necessary to keep companies like Shell operational at full capacity so we don't have to fall back to relying on Gazprom. but I don't know nearly enough about the situation to say the subsidies should or shouldn't be granted. There is still a need for fossil fuels, we can't transition in a day and stopping over night would be disastrous. We need a source of fossil fuel, it better be Shell then russian fuel but that's dependant on how much of this subsidy goes to the pockets of the shareholders and top executives of Shell because those people don't need a subsidy.

Companies that make billions upon billions every year in profits, especially in times of greatest need, do not need subsidies. However, the poorest among us, whose income has been eaten away by inflation, do. I do not support protests that block major highways, as there is a great variety of people with different needs, including emergency, using them. However, protesting in front of city, state, or federal government buildings, and those who make such decisions and subsidies possible, are fair game. BOTTOM LINE: Support for any cause requires both bringing attention and... influencing all people in a positive way.

The solution is very simple.
Don't give in to people who break the law to get what they want.
I encourage the Dutch government to increase subsidies for fossil fuels until the "protesters" learn to protest in a way that is legal.
