If they identify the substance to be toxic and deadly to humans in small quantities, then that is attempted murder and he needs to be punished accordingly. Not some 6 month vacation stint in the County jail, but a lengthy prison sentence.

I think there needs to be a follow up story and disclose WHAT that chemical actually was and this person should face some serious jail time because there is no telling what crimes he’s capable of if allowed to roam free amongst the general public. I wouldn’t put it past him to poison a coworker that he doesn’t like as well. They need to do a through investigation on him and no telling what they’ll find.
