In this video, we’re going to talk about the big cholesterol myth. I’m going to explain cholesterol and where most of it actually comes from.

You’ve probably been told a lot of bad things about cholesterol like it causes heart disease or clogged arteries. They may also tell you to eat more cholesterol-lowering foods or take cholesterol-lowering medications. A lot of these things people say are just going to be apart of the cholesterol myth.

What is cholesterol?

Cholesterol has a purpose. Cholesterol is the raw material that makes up hormones. In fact, 75% of the cholesterol in your body is made by your own body—only 25% comes from your diet. There are just as many problems that occur with low-cholesterol as high-cholesterol.

You also need cholesterol to make bile, and vitamin D. All of the cell membranes, and your brain are made of cholesterol, and the skin is lined with cholesterol. You need cholesterol—it’s not as bad as you think.

The problem with cholesterol is if you when you have more cholesterol going in the body versus coming out. But, this is overrated.

A few more things about cholesterol:

1. Carbohydrates turn into bad cholesterol (LDL cholesterol) and triglycerides faster than consuming cholesterol turns into cholesterol.

2. When you’re under stress, it can spike your cholesterol. Your body needs cholesterol to make anti-stress hormones.

3. Eggs will increase good cholesterol (HDL cholesterol).

*Also, the side-effects of many cholesterol-lowering medications are major, and there can be more than the potential problems with cholesterol. It’s important to understand all of the facts.

My GP, Lipid Dr and Cardiologist are worried because my cholesterol is extremely high. They have put me on a huge daily dose of Statins. I don't like taking them. I want to come off these and cure myself with diet but they are insistant that I don't, since I had a recent TIA. However I had them all puzzled recently because I had a CT Scan of my heart and my heart arteries and although my Cholesterol is extremely high there is absolutely ZERO Calcium build up in my arteries. I have fortunately been lucky to have inherited good skin from my Father. I do however now believe that having youthful skin for my age, could also be due to having high cholesterol. I hope this message gives someone in my situation some hope. It's great to see you Dr Berg on one of your older videos from 10 years ago. How far you have come, since then. You've done so well and really impacted people's health for the better during this time. I hope you realise how much your audience appreciates you. 😊

Eggs and meat are the best. We need grass fed and
pasture raised if possible. I can't do that - but I know the truth!
Thanks Doc Berg for your help!

It took courage to step out and state these facts about cholersterol. I have refused statins for cholesterol from multiple doctors in the little town my wife and I live in. I have been refused medical help from these same doctors because of my stance on statins. It's all about the money to many doctors, They are either ignorant of honest, thorough studies on cholesterol or just, plain dishonest. I beieve the latter. I hope Youtube still carries your show.

So the doctors prescribing medicines lack this knowledge or so they have incentives from the pharmaceutical companies?

To share an anecdote, I had a relative  -- who was in her 90s at the time  -- who did all that her doctors advised her to do to lower her cholesterol -- short of taking statins I gathered.  Yet she would go back to her doctor and find her cholesterol was still supposedly high.  I was like she's in her 90s and apparently very hale.  If she lowered her blood cholesterol to acceptable levels, were they expecting her to live to 120??  I read much later that this conventional view of cholesterol as bad could have lead to the Alzheimer's crisis and general brain decline.  It's amazing how views can change so drastically.

This information really raise my awareness. It helps me assess my doctor a bit closer🤔 I notice that my doctor use his 'nice personality' to 'sell' me his medicines. I look after myself really well but the past 6-9 months was extremely stress. My cholesterol is high but my doctor never really ask why?? Do research & make judgement call

When I became diabetic (T2) my doctor put me on a statin as a preventive measure. I stayed on them for about 20 years until I started a Ketogenic diet and started doing research (such as watching these videos). My total cholesterol off the drug was 220. According to some studies I have seen for my age (64) that is a very healthy number. I will resist the statins even if it means my doctor has to tell my insurance company I am "non-compliant"

I watch your videos everyday to stay motivated and I've changed my diet since watching you after finding out I have high cholesterol. Can you make more videos on this and can you explain what one cheat meal does if you have it very rarely ? Ofcourse I understand we have to cut it out but how realistic is that for most people . I'm talking have one once of chocolate a week or a few slices of pizza a month or every 2 months and so on
