9 Habits The Stoics Want You To Stop Doing

Excellence isn’t this thing you do one time. It’s a way of living. It’s foundational. It’s like an operating system and the code this system operates on is habit.

There is nothing more powerful than a good habit. Nothing that holds us back quite like a bad habit. We are what we do. What we do determines who we can be. You know this. You’ve seen these forces at work in your own life, for better and—frustratingly all too often—for worse. What we do in practice, the Stoics knew, is how we play when it’s gametime. Repetition, routine, ritual, habits—they dictate who we are and what we become. Success and happiness isn’t random, it’s a habit.

In this video Ryan Holiday gives you 9 habits that you should stop doing in 2023.

Some of these principles need caveats. For example, giving everything your best effort 100% of the time sounds like a great recipe for burnout. We're human beings, not robots. IMO, a better guiding principle would be to ask yourself, "Will I regret it later if I don't give this my best effort now?" Your answer should inform your decision. Minimize your regrets and don't waste opportunities.

Otherwise, this video is a very timely and inspiring production. Thank you for sharing.

I used to justify my bad behaviors saying I had bad parents. Then someone called me out of it. Then I became my own parent and started giving myself the love I needed. I also gave the discipline I needed to eat well, exercise and grow emotionally too. Care for the self. Become good to yourself 💫

Regarding always doing one's best, I had a professor confront me on one occasion with something like this. He was quite perturbed and called me a chronic underachiever. He made the point that I had the potential to be at the top of my class and it really bothered him that I was content with less than the maximum level of achievement that I was capable of. This comment bothered me somewhat but in my mind I have always seen these things as some level of cost-benefit analysis. At the time my response to him was something to the effect of, "Yes, I may technically be capable of that level of achievement but at what cost, and what would be the benefit of my doing-so?" I graduated with Great Distinction from my Bachelor's program, I had academic scholarships all the way through, I was granted admission to the College of Graduate Studies and Research. I could have worked probably twice as hard and made significant sacrifices in other areas of my life, but why would I do that? At the time, and even now, it seems that overwhelming effort for marginal gain is not a productive path. I question my own reasoning regularly on this and other topics but this is the conclusion I have consistently come to.

"Why are you doing things that you don't think deserve your best?" That's a good question!

Stoicism has always helped me when I face my toughest times every day.
In great suffering, I started to understand that I must stand on my own feet and not make foolish decisions that will cause me my own heartache

For me, I have acute anxiety, I can’t just stop it by will—but I do have control over how I handle myself and treat others when I’m anxious.

I’m guilty of so many of these and don’t even realize it. And it’s self-sabotaging! I’m saving this video to my “revisit” playlist for when I need a reminder

This notion of "discarding" negative emotions and habits is key to stoicism.

My honest opinion is that advices like "Stop letting anxiety rule you" or "Stop doing less than your best" are completely useless. It is usually not clear what the cause for the anxiety or lack of motivation is and what actual changes in your life are needed to rich these goals. Especially when it comes to anxiety most people do not know how to fix it and if it is too bad even therapy is needed to deal with this issue. And trust me: Your therapist will not just tell you "Stop letting anxiety rule you"
