The 2021 EYFS Framework features some key changes compared to its predecessor, so it’s a good idea to keep in mind the importance of following the children’s lead, keeping things accessible and not losing sight of the basics.

To help you get started with all this, we’ve complied this new ‘EYFS Focus’ video series with activities focused on the seven different Areas of Learning. In this video we look at the specific area of Literacy.

According to the framework document, “It is crucial for children to develop a life-long love of reading. Reading consists of two dimensions: language comprehension and word reading. Language comprehension (necessary for both reading and writing) starts from birth. It only
develops when adults talk with children about the world around them and the
books (stories and non-fiction) they read with them, and enjoy rhymes, poems and
songs together. Skilled word reading, taught later, involves both the speedy
working out of the pronunciation of unfamiliar printed words (decoding) and the
speedy recognition of familiar printed words. Writing involves transcription
(spelling and handwriting) and composition (articulating ideas and structuring
them in speech, before writing).”

Within this Area of Learning, the Early Learning Goals for when children reach the end of Reception focus on ‘Comprehension’, ‘Word Reading’ and ‘Writing’.

We’re releasing a new Area of Learning video each week so make sure to check back soon!

Connect with Famly

Here at Famly we make better nursery management software. Working in close partnership with almost 1,500 childcare providers worldwide, we help streamline the tedious admin and paperwork that comes with running a busy childcare setting.

The last thing managers and staff need is software that is old-fashioned, difficult to understand, and slow. That's why we continually focus on building a system that is fast and easy-to-use, but still packed with all the features you need to save you time - and get back to what's most important - the children.

Please note: here at Famly we love sharing creative activities for you to try with the children at your setting, but you know them best. Take the time to consider adaptions you might need to make so these activities are accessible and developmentally appropriate for the children you work with. Just as you ordinarily would, conduct risk assessments for your children and your setting before undertaking new activities, and ensure you and your staff are following your own health and safety guidelines.
