This video shows one way to teach letters and sounds, using "x" -- a letter that breaks the rules! The students learn that it usually makes the /ks/ sound, but it can also sound like /z/ in "xylophone" and /ex/ in "x-ray." The teacher and students also sound out several words that contain the letter "x."

You did a great job of holding the attention of your students. This was a good lesson. I have a suggestion for blending the word “box”. Be careful not to add the schwa sound to make “buh” but clip the sound; /b/. You don’t want students to add the schwa sound to letters or it could cause confusion when blending the sounds to read the word.

"x-ray" actually does have the /ks/ sounds in it. These are the sounds in the word: /e/ /k/ /s/ /r/ /ay/ Right there in the middle is /ks/. 😬 I just thought I'd mention this as it was confusing for me, so I could see how it has the potential to confuse a young child who is just learning and hears the /ks/ sounds in the word "x-ray."
