When To 'Break & Shake' A Grain Spawn Bag

preview_player
Показать описание
Today, I am doing the break and shake for a grain spawn bag. We wait until the grain is 20%-30% colonized and break and shake the mycelium. I will also show you my incubation tent setup. Thanks for watching.

I’m just winging it at this point. I got 2 all in one bags one I kept in bag and it’s looking great!! And the other I took out and put in a tub. It got dried out really fast I wrapped it all but the top In aluminum foil and spray 3-4 times a day. It has come back to life fast af.

This is an excellent introduction to the bake and shake process, for the small home grower - subscribed!

However, "90 minutes at 15psi, " while the current standard advice, really isn't a precise measure of *temperature, * which is what sterilizes the grain - and also alters the nutritional profile of that grain. Without temperature control, grain usually gets scorched to some degree. Mycelium responds to overcooked grain (its food) like we do: it eats around it, resulting in weak, striated, or complete lack of, spawn. Often, bacterial colonies or trichoderma take advantage of such weak spawning, to gain a foothold - whereas a fast, robust mycelium strike (from optimized nutrition) would have prevented that.

We've found that by monitoring temperature within the pressurized sterilization chamber, and using that information in a feedback loop to control the temperature source, it eliminates weak spawning, wasted grain, and inefficient energy usage, and results in higher mushroom yields. It turns out that our strains aren't "finicky" or "unpredictable" - they each have very specific nutritional preferences - preferences that even the best growers, in the current state of our industry, tend to ignore. But this is changing!

"The Big Fun Guy" company makes a temperature probe and hot plate controller (called "The Control Unit") that fits pressure cookers, allowing precise control over temperature, and with it, the nutritional profile of the grain. The Big Fun Guy's "Big Unit" handles 50 gallons of grain (with an 80 gallon option). A dream tool for cultivators who are serious about making a living from their mushroom grow operation, it has two, moveable, temperature probes, and utilizes the passive thermodynamics of an insulated chamber, in an automated, "set it and forget it" process. The Big Unit brings every grain in the batch up to the same, precise temperature, with no over- or under-cooking, which is impossible with larger, "tower" style autoclaves that were designed for the brewing industry (those concentrate heat at the bottom heating element, and at with the rising heat at the top, scorching grain).

Big Fun Guy precision sterilizing tools eliminate waste, save on energy, grow more mushrooms, and with bigger harvests per dollar and hour of labor invested, grow businesses. 50 (or 80) gallons is human-scale, an agile, allowing serious growers the agility to produce grain for multiple strains at the same time, with each batch nutritionally optimized for each specific strain. If this is interesting to you, email me at dan (at) thebigfunguy (dot) com, and I'll answer any questions and get you started.

My dog just destroyed my uncle ben bags 😂😢, I got 2 that were saved. One is blue meanies and the other is albino golden teacher, both were inoculated the same day, the blue meanie is ready for bulk but the teacher is just now getting visible mycelium, crazy how they vary! Love the videos and couldn't do it without you!❤

Just outta curiosity, what will happen if you break and shake a little early? Then break and shake again later… Think it would help the process?

Man I’m winging it as well . I had ordered a “grow at home kit “ . I sterilized everything, fired the needle let it cool down and shot the spores in . Put the grain bag in a small tub dated it and now I wait . Good luck to me and everyone else in this uprising culture .

I use a still air box as a mini Martha tent. Tiny humidifier and tiny exhaust fan. No problems so far 🤷‍♂️

I see you have a all in one grow bag starting to colonize in your tent! I don’t see a video on that do you have one? If so can you please shoot me the link?

Just checking to see if I should proceed to this step. I haven't looked at my bags since I inoculated. It's been 20 days.

I’d put positive pressure in the tent from your hepa filter. With negative pressure in your tent you’ll be pulling unclean unfiltered air into your tent from any crack or material flaw. It’s better to leak clean air from your tent via positive air pressure than to accidentally suck in contaminated air via negative air pressure. 👍
