In this video, Shawn Powers covers the top ten tips anyone who is new to using Linux should know. Although Linux is relatively straightforward to use, if you’ve grown up in a Windows environment, you’ll see a number of small differences that might throw you off.

Linux is a new world for many individuals. This video serves as a brief orientation to the world of Linux and includes Shawn’s top tips for successfully orienting yourself. These include:

• Understanding what a distribution is and how it can benefit you.
• Grasping the purpose and roles of Gnome and KDE.
• Why you should use a live CD or USB when you’re starting with Linux.
• Why you should use a virtual machine and what you can expect out of it.
• How to use package management for installation.
• How to use Linux folder structures, including executables, configuration files, personal files, and bulk files.
• What the Terminal is, how to use it, and how the text-based commands and GUI interact.
• How mounts and drive letters work and what you can expect from these in a Linux environment.
• Which slashes you should use in this operating system (hint: it’s forward slashes for Linux and backslashes for Windows).
• Where to find help for Linux when you can’t find the answers elsewhere.

Everyone seems to fear Linux and think it is difficult to use.... Not true at all, if you can use mac or windows you can use Linux. Like stated in this video most have a software center which makes it so you don't have to use command line. I will almost guarantee if you can find software for Microsoft and mac you can find a alternative on Linux. Most people won't switch because of games but most don't realize most big games are now getting ported to Linux and if the aren't you can use wine to run them in most cases. Also you could duel boot Windows and Linux if you want to still play games on Windows and use Linux as a stable daily driver. I have found Linux to be more stable than Windows at least in my case because as we all know all hardware is different. If you aren't into gaming all that much and want a stable, free, and does not spy on you then I would go with Linux. Give it a try for a week and I will bet that most will like it. It may take some learning (Not much) but when you started using Windows or Mac you had to learn to use those also.

That was great, I wish I use Linux more often rather than rarely. IMHO I would say Linux is way better than Windows (can't say OS X because it is based on Unix). Thank you!

OS, just like everything in this world, has their own target user base and everybody has their prefer method to work on. There is no need to push everyone over and put down on other products. jeez
