In the late 1400s, several developments in Europe paved the way for European exploration in the Americas. In this video, Kim Kutz Elliott discusses how Portugal led the charge with new navigation technology, and how the unification of Spain set the stage for Columbus's voyage in 1492.

when Constantine (the white spot that the arrow went through) fell, the conquerors banned Europe from the Indian spice trade, which meant they had to find another route leading to the discovery of the new world.
So modern and ancient history is sometimes divided at the fall of Constantine.

Should people looking to study for AP US history on their own use this course. Would anyone recommend it?

I found an error. On the map at 6:00, it says *Guinea, * but that's actually *Guinea-Bissau.*
(I'm not old enough to leave comments on Khan Academy, so I'm putting it here)

Canary? More like "Can't quite carry" the mouse pointer to the actual islands.

But in all seriousness, I think this is still a good video, and Khan Academy's stuff is awesome!

For the Japanese, the all world was built just by Japan, China and India, until the Portuguese arrive and the world openned to them.

I do appreciate this summary; and history, true history that is, is most refreshing. Although, forced conversion really wasn't practiced; it is a bit of false propaganda at that.

Much like modern days, I suspect Europeans would rather go around the world than cut through the "bad " neighborhood...
