There were several reasons why Europeans were reluctant to explore down the African coast before the Ottoman trade blockage forced their hand.
1. They were sailing past miles of dry barren desert, and it was thought it was going to carry on getting hotter and more arid all the way to the equator, and beyond.
2. The North east trade winds blowing towards the equator would be difficult to sail back against if anything untoward happened.
3. As they sailed south, the pole star, which was their principal guide, dropped down below the horizon. They would loose their sense of direction.
4. Sea currents create turbulent waters around the headland where previous voyages had given up.
Henry the navigator had to be quite persuasive to get one of his captains to go further south. The bold captain didn't creep along the coast but sailed right out into the Atlantic before dropping south, and then heading east for the African coast. He'd gone far enough south to get past the arid zone, and the taboo was broken.

I had a feeling this video was force watched to students by teachers.

I remember my Japanese teacher told us the entirety of japanese history through the video made by bill wurtz.
Good times.
I watched the vid so many times I was (and also the only one) who was talking in sync with the video.
Can't believe no one in my class knows bill wurtz.

I clicked on this video of my own volition though.
I'm a fiction novel writer in training hoping to sell my books in the future and become popular or something.
I'm doing research basically.

If you are one of the few who watched this of your own free will, leave a reply and reason why!

Youtube algorithm recommended it?
Bored?
Research like me?
History nerd?

Oh yeah, thanks for the video btw, History Animation Channel!
I'll be sure to look for you first the next time I got another burning history question or something!
