Taking a look at the top 5 free plugins I use in my day to day productions. Most of these will rival thier expensive counterparts. You don't have to spend a great deal of money to get great results!

I spent more time on the design of ReaGate than any other aspect of REAPER. As a drum recording fanatic, I was extremely unhappy with all the gates out there and wanted the best possible tool for discriminating between say cymbals and toms and hi hats and snares. My life has had its ups and downs lately, but your praise of ReaGate really puts a smile on my face! Thank you!

As a veteran engineer ( 30 years plus) I have to say, I REALLY dig your videos... and I'm not even a "metal guy" !
I might not agree with you 100% of the time, but the things that I may disagree with you about are always from a PERCEPTION angle, for example, certain tones/sounds you may like that I might not be as crazy about - but it's never about the process itself. 
I think that you provide a great resource here, with insightful information for those who are first starting out and trying to learn; and your enthusiasm and passion for the craft of audio recording is obvious.
Hat's off to you for taking the time for those who have questions but lack answers. 
( I wish something like this would have been around when I was first learning - in 1978, LOL )

First off I've been working on noise metal electronic music for at least a decade and a half. I download and use every VST I can and check up on as many plugins as possible and even paid for thousands of dollars of plugins. I figure I have and have used almost everything, then you do this list and drop some plugins I've never heard of before.

You truly are a fucking rock god. A fucking GOD.

WITHOUT A FUCKING DOUBT. I was expecting the same shit. I know classic plugins are amazing, and I actually really love the delay, with the analog, tape and digital sounds that I still haven't found anything that works better for that character, but the Reaper plugins are what I was looking for more for BitWig controlling FX easily until they fix the automation lanes.

The rest is perfect looking simple, I would never have thought to look at it.

Great top list, Glenn. When I see a good sound engineer like you recommending five plugins three of which are my favorite, that's really encouraging. Gotta check out those variety of sound plugins as well now!

Completely agree with everything you said man. Variety of Sound and ReaPlugs are amazing plugins. I wrote about free plugins a year ago on my blog and I'm happy to see that a professional like you gives those free plugins the visibility they deserve! I love the Reaper plugins as well. I tend to use other VSTs for EQ and compression, but I use the gate all the time. Its really helped calm down my snare sound a bit.

I freakin' love modulation FX. Chorus, Flanger, Phaser hell its all good. A good flanger effect through a marshall is a kick ass 80s metal sound

Have you tried virtual amp Emissary by Ignite Amps? This plugin does amazing job, and also very tweakable. Even with default settings I have got really nice guitar tone. Of course, it's free :)
