Virtually everyone in every culture believed the sun (like Apollo's chariot) and moon (Selene) were literally 'IN the sky' and the world was (yes, flat and) covered by a dome -the firmament in the Genesis 1 (personified as Uranus in Greek mythology and Nüt of Egyptian mythology)

And it makes sense everyone believed this because that is exactly what you (and they would) see when looking up.
