The main problem with the decoding of the lid is that the shape in the seat/base of the "rocketship" is actually the face of a known deity of the Mayans.
Furthermore, "real" Aliens are most likely to be using some form of anti-gravity or Quantum field propulsion system and nothing as crude as a rocket, which would not be suitable for interstellar travel anyway. Von Daniken has most likely fallen into the trap of viewing it through the eyes of our contemporary technology which is unlikely to be relevant. If the figure was sitting in a "flying saucer" Von Daniken's argument would make more sense IMO.

I'm currently in Mexico. I have now visited Chitzen Itza for the third time and am always fascinated. Have also visited many important Maya and other pre-Columbian sites in Mexico, Guatemala and Belize in the past. Read MUCH about ancient cultures of all continents. I think the thesis of visiting extraterrestrial civilizations in the past may be correct.
