Instructions
Turn off the water. Drain the pipes in a nearby sink to keep the shower dry. Turn on the shower to remove any remaining water and equalize the pressure. Cover or close the drain to prevent small items that drop from getting lost. Remove the handle cap with a small flat head. Unscrew the handle and remove it from the valve. Remove the metal handle extension. Remove the retaining clip from the valve body tube then remove the washer. If the valve cannot be easily removed with pliers, then use the removal tool from the package of the new valve and align the grooves on top of the valve. Use a wrench on the removal tool to rotate the valve back and forth. You will need to apply inward pressure to keep the removal tool in contact with the valve. Once you get the valve loose, remove the removal tool and pull out the valve with pliers. If you are still having trouble, you can use a moen core puller tool to assist with stuck valves
Once the valve is removed, clean out any mineral reposits, then insert the new valve with the notched side facing up. Use the removal tool to help press the valve into the body tube all the way. Replace the retainer clip and washer. Slide back on the handle extension, then screw back on the handle. Reattach the handle cap then slowly turn back on the water until the system fills, do not quickly flood the system with water as it may damage things. Once the water is fully on, check your new valve for leaks then test it to make sure it is working. Verify hot and cold are on the correct side. If they aren’t you will need to flip the valve 180 degrees.
