We call it the "nature coast" in Florida and prize it highly.

We need to protect the big bend forever

It’s probably one of the only places in Florida that could withstand a storm surge because it has the original vegetation. Much of the coastal area in the south has had mangroves destroyed in order to put in beaches.

Mangrove swamps are vital for the Ecosystems. Fish nurseries, tough roots holding the coast together, habitat for millions of birds. It should be a nature preserve.

because builders haven't destroyed it for condos yet.

The Big Bend coast is NOT a swamp. The coastline has some sandy barrier islands and most of the coast is salt marsh, and lush grass flats in water out to about 10 ft deep.

Don't confuse the Suwannee Channel with the Suwannee Canal.
The Suwannee Channel was a geologic formation formed millions of years ago.
The Suwannee Canal was a large scale drainage project started in the late 1800s.

Thousands of people live in the big bend coastal area. It's just not overly populated with sandy white beaches and condos.🙌

Live in the Big I'm not with the Census, but roughly 2 million people live in what is considered the Big Bend. 2 million people = NOBODY in 2024 I guess. XD

I rode my bicycle around Florida in Jan/Feb of this year (approx 1600 miles). The big bend area was one of my favorite parts. Beautiful scenery and wild areas.

For the record, it is inhabited. There’s Suwannee, Horseshoe beach, Steinhatchee and a few more but they’re so small as towns that they hardly show on the map! You really have to zoom. Was actually cool to look at some of the houses on google maps! They’re definitely surrounded by some crazy swampiness though.

You should talk about their underwater caves and aquifers

The Nature Coast is Floridas Great Barrier Reef! It’s highly protected and the state AND locals will not allow anyone build anything remotely close to it.

When I was a 18 I wanted to go to the beach/ocean. The shortest distance from me was straight down from Georgia to the Big Bend area- not realizing it was mostly just miles & miles of swampy places😂 No Google back then. It was beautiful swamp land at least💁🏼‍♀️💖

As resident and owner of 200 acres in Madison County, which is all high and dry. I am very proud of it not being over populated.

Interesting. My wife and I were married in 1967. We used to travel to Florida often from Ohio, Kentucky, and Tennessee. We drove that stretch of land for many years. It was often flooded and there were times we would race the rising water to get through the area and on to our destination. We finally traveled mainly by plane and went to other places. It was fun though and every now and then we would end up in one of her favorites places. Daytona Beach. This video brings back some "fun" thoughts and some difficult thoughts too. RIP

Right on some counts but drop the "U" sound in "Suwanee." The U isn't truly pronounced and it's more like "S'wanee.'

I’m a simple man. I see Florida related content, I like.
