You have excellent points about Jane Fairfax as a rival for Emma. In fact, if we read the events from Jane's POV, we would consider Emma as a much more "defined rival" for Jane. And I agree that Mary always tells the truth about what she wants, it's Edmund who wrongly thinks he can change her.

I really enjoy Mary Crawford as a character. She is really well rounded and nuanced. Caroline Bingley has to be number one.
