New Ocean That Is Being Formed In Africa. A new ocean is being formed in Africa. Geologists have confirmed that a new ocean is being created as the African continent is split in half. An international effort has revealed that a 35 miles long rift appeared in the Ethiopian deserts of the Far region in 2005 and is probably the start of a brand-new sea.

The recent study, published in the journal Geophysical Research Letters, combines seismic data from the rift formation to demonstrate that it is driven by processes similar to those at the ocean's bottom. The tectonic plates of Africa and Arabia collide in the desert and have been gradually separating for about 30 million years. The same motion has also split the Red Sea, but this is only happening at a rate of a fraction of an inch per year.

Soon humanity might have two motherlands. Africa's 54 nations are being divided according to geologists researching the continent's plate tectonics. The East African Rift, which separates eastern coastal countries like Kenya and Tanzania from most of the continent, passes across Mozambique from the Afar area of northern Ethiopia.

A new study in the journal Nature found that the two pieces of land are separating at a rate of 7 millimeters per year. Nations like Zambia and Uganda will have their own coastlines. Scientists claim that several currently active volcanoes along the river, including the Aloo Dalapila in Ethiopia and the Old wenyolangai in Tanzania, provide new insights into the process. In particular, the Erta Ale volcano in Ethiopia has been erupting nonstop for more than 50 years. The Victoria microplate, the biggest of its kind on Earth and tucked between each side of the rift, has been rotating against the clock for the past two years.

We as kenyan are ok with the drift and separation from the rest of the content as long as we have Uganda and Tanzania as neighbors. We love these two guys and can't afford to live without them 🇰🇪🇺🇬🇹🇿

Two decades ago, my sister was on a research team in the Turkish mountains, and they predicted an increase in quake activity which is now occurring. While that clearly is north of the primary areas described here, the plates are indeed in motion and one releases pressure on another. A lot of imagery and information in one short video! Thank you.

No worries this new ocean will take about 5 to 10 million years to form.

Sadly, you won't be seeing this ocean for a time. After all, this process takes millions of years. The Atlantic started to form with a rift valley and accompanying series of flood basalt eruptions (the Central Atlantic Magmatic Province [CAMP]) in the early Mesozoic, about the time of the Triassic-Jurassic boundary (201 ma), and only began to look like an actual ocean towards the end of that era (middle-late Cretaceous [80 ma]).

Loved the video thanks. I reside in South Africa and the 10km deep earthquakes has increased in my region. I don't agree with some people that this is something that will take millions or thousands of years as we have seen how quickly stuff can alter in nature. Keep up the good work.

This is not exactly new. The process has been on-going for a long time and will continue for a long time. It has been known about at least since plate tectonics was accepted. The rate is slow enough that none of the current political entities in Africa will end up with their own coastlines - they will be long gone.

Incredible scenes about tectonic plates drift, , , , it will take some time from now as scientists suggested, , , because for the sea to form like that it would be a wonder to me to witness that phenomenon, , , the group of geologist must carry on with their search they are doing a great job to keep us updated about our the changes of our world.

I think you guys should have given a realistic 'aftermath' explaination as well, the destruction to the land adjacent to the break, as well as the resulting tsunami's, earthquakes up and down the entire continent, mudslides, sinkholes, floods and general apocalyptic after effects will cause major destruction if such a thing ever happened... Just saying...

It's not with any tectonic shift. It's due to massive scale oil exploration. Creating masssuve vault underneath the earth. That vault is getting pulling the other nearer part of earth surface.
